The University of Cumbria places people at the heart of all it does, to make a difference that goes beyond the classroom. Created in 2007, the university has a proud history of teaching from campuses in Carlisle, Ambleside in the Lake District, Lancaster, Workington, Barrow and London.

Careers advice

Health services

• The university provides guidance to students on their physical health and personal safety, along with useful resources and emergency contacts.

Counselling and Mental Health Support

• The Mental Health and Well-being Service incorporates counselling, psychotherapy, and mental health support. There is also mental health mentoring for students with Disabled Students' Allowances funding.
• Qualified and trainee psychological therapists and mental health case workers offer appointments to students Monday–Friday. Appointments are at various times and days on each campus, with some evening appointments. There are also workshops and group sessions run at different times throughout the year.
• The range of support includes guided self-help, person-centred counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, mental health support, or referrals to specialist services. Issues discussed typically include low mood, anxiety or stress, bereavement, homesickness, eating problems, abuse, relationship difficulties, self-esteem or low confidence, and loneliness.

Disability support

• Additional support services are provided for disabled students, including students with specific learning differences (SpLD) such as dyslexia, and some aspects of mental ill health.
• An individualised action plan is created, giving an overview of the impact of the student's disability or specific learning difference, detailing the adjustments required.

Students' Union

• The Students' Union (UCSU) is a student-led charity, representing the views and interests of its members. With the university it is joint signatory to a Students' Charter, putting SU engagement at the heart of university decision-making.
• The union's motto is 'Supporting and representing you to achieve your ambitions.' It guides every decision made and action taken to help students make the most of their university experience, with a strong focus on academic development and volunteering activities.
• The SU offers a wide variety of societies and social groups to choose from; great for exploring new opportunities, developing a passion – and of course, making new friends and generally having great fun.

History

• The University of Cumbria is a perfect blend of old and new: one of Britain's newest universities, it has an illustrious history of educating professionals over the past 150 years.
• It was formed in 2007 from Cumbria Institute of the Arts, St Martin's College and the former Cumbrian campus of the University of Central Lancashire.

Fascinating Fact

• The University of Cumbria is the only UK university with a campus inside a National Park (now also a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The Ambleside campus in the heart of the Lake District is one of five campuses that make up the university, along with Lancaster, London, and two sites in Carlisle.
