The last meal of a death row inmate who killed his ex-girlfriend's new lover and then raped her has been revealed.

Russell Bucklew was executed by lethal injection in Missouri's death chamber in Bonne Terre at 6.23pm local time yesterday.

For his final meal, the murderer ordered a gyro sandwich, a smoked brisket sandwich, two orders of French fries, a cola and a banana split.

The 51-year-old shot and killed Michael Sanders at his trailer home in southern Missouri in 2006.

He then raped his former girlfriend Stephanie Ray, who had earlier fled to stay with Sanders.

The case hit the news in April this year after the US Supreme Court ruled in a narrow 5-4 decision that Bucklew's execution could go ahead .

His legal team had argued that death by lethal injection would cause him "undue pain" by rupturing blood-filled tumours on his body caused by a congenital condition called cavernous hemangioma.

Justice Neil Gorsuch, a Donald Trump appointee, said in his decision: "The Eighth Amendment does not guarantee a prisoner a painless death - something that, of course, isn't guaranteed to many people, including most victims of capital crimes."

KFVS news anchor Kathy Sweeney witnessed Bucklew's execution and said there were no complications.

"His feet were twitching under the sheets, there was a sigh and then no more movement," Sweeney said in a broadcast.
