The CM1936 features a powerful, ultra-efficient motor and a new-and-improved blade design for better cuts and longer runtime. In fact, this mower can cut up to a typical 1/3-acre lawn on just a single charge.
Fast Starts and Quiet Operation
The CM1936 is incredibly easy to use, thanks to advanced features that address the needs and wants of cordless mower users. First, it starts instantly with a key and quick pull of the handle. And once started, its quiet operation--much quieter than gas mowers--means you can mow when you want to--without worrying about disturbing your neighbors.
Easy Adjustments and Storage
Patented one-touch height adjustment means you can quickly alter the cutting height of all four wheels at once with the pull of a single lever. And unlike traditional mowers, the CM1936 can be folded for upright or compact storage, making it ideal for those with limited space in the shed or garage.
Mulch or Rear-Bag Collection
The mower is equipped for mulching the clippings back into your lawn, which provides a natural fertilizing effect. Also, for easy clipping collection, the CM1936 is designed with a rear bag that empties easily.
Removable Battery for Convenient Charging
For simple, convenient charging, the CM1936 boasts a removable battery that easily lifts out and can be charged away from the mower. Users can also purchase additional batteries for extended runtime, giving you the flexibility to handle larger properties.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), gas powered engines from outdoor lawn equipment produce over one million tons of polluting air emissions per year. The CM1936, in contrast, produces zero harmful emissions in your yard. In addition, its charging systems are Energy Star qualified, which means it is guaranteed to use less energy and save money.
The CM1936 is backed by a two-year warranty and lifetime deck warranty.

First, to not only be "green" but to also spend my money "locally" I tried to buy this mower near where I live. Nobody had it. Home Depot listed it on their Web site but none of their stores carried it nor could they order it for me. No matter, I had accidentally wound up paying for Amazon's Prime shipping around the end of last year when I hadn't mean to so that means my ordering this mower here got it to me in just two days. Amazing.
The box weighs a lot and even had tape on it to alert the shipper to that fact. I chose not to cut the box down and roll the mower out like the booklet says as I wanted the box intact in case the mower had to go back for any reason; but what I should have done is unclip the battery and take that out separately from the mower unit instead of lifting the whole thing out (duh).
However, I appreciated the fact that it *was* heavy. It made the mower seem more solid, more sturdy, even if 65% of the weight is the battery itself. I unfolded and tightened the handle, browsed through the instructions to make sure I did the initial setup and charge correctly; they point out in several places the importance of the order in which things are plugged in IE plug the charger into the mower's connection *first* when connecting and *last* when disconnecting. However, even though I RTM, I still goofed when performing the first charge. I had not used this garage outlet before (never had to) but tested it with a corded helper lamp to make sure it had power. Plugged the charger in (in the mower first, then the wall) and saw the red light on. What I didn't realize is that this outlet was connected to the lights and the mower only charged for a few minutes. When I checked it the next day the light on the charger was out. I thought that was odd but felt confident it had gotten power. What was nice to see was how long the mower ran despite my screw up. I guess that means it came with a full to near fully charged battery. Read on.
After cleaning up the lawn of sticks and pine cones I was eager to get started with my first mowing with the CM1936. Now here's where Black & Decker, and battery powered mowers, won me over. To start the mower you put in the plastic key (which essentially bridges two cable ends and allows power to the motor, the green equivalent to putting the cable on the spark plug of your gas powered mower) and push the red button on the side of the handle while squeezing the dead-man bar. That is it. Amazing. All the other times I've ever had to start a (gas) mower it has been an ordeal in frustration, arm pain, expense. All that is now gone and I am forever grateful. Not only does that start the mower up but there is no big puff of exhaust (typical for gas powered mowers for the first firing up for a season) no loud roar (though I wouldn't say this mower is exactly quiet, still much better however), no stooping over.
As for actual mowing performance, I set the height to middle for the first pass of the season, not knowing quite what to expect. Setting the height is as easy as you've likely heard about. Squeeze the height adjustment handle and push down until you hit the mark then let the handle go. This mower worked just like any gas mower I had used. Cut just fine - I probably could have put the blade height a couple stops lower for most of the lawn but there were a couple thick tufts I suspect it wouldn't have gotten through. I guess that's the only difference I could notice when mowing, grass that might have barely slowed a gas mower caused the CM1936 to audibly drag. Not terribly mind you and it did cut the grass in those spots but it did have to work a little harder. Also the swath is a bit narrower than I am used to but once I adjusted to where I needed to be on subsequent rows I no longer noticed it. Finally, I chose to use the mulching insert instead of the bag for this mowing and it worked great, at least at the middle blade height I used.
What was pleasant to find out is that I believe I could have done the entire lawn on one charge. I was assuming our lawn took up about half of our one acre property but perhaps it's a bit less than that. Still, with me bungling the first charge, I still got through 80% of the lawn; the rest is under pines where the grass grows more slowly and where I had yet to rake up the pine cones. Now I'm wondering if buying a second battery when I got the mower was prudent or even necessary. Still, if I keep this mower and use it for the number of years I hope to then I suspect some day I may want another battery and I'd hate to not be able to get one in years to come.
So far so good and as I use this mower this 2010 season I will come back and update this review with any new revelations, problems, insights etc.
Pros:
Easy instant start! Pull cord? What's that? ;)
Mows almost exactly like a gas mower IE very well.
Seems well built.
Easy to remove battery means if I have a spare that's charged, mowing an area bigger than one charge is simple to do.
No gasoline and/or oil mess, no plugs to replace, no bad smells.
Manual states battery should be charging unless in use. I think this is a good thing as if you can remember to plug it in when done, you will always have a mower fully charged when it comes time to mow again.
Appears as though I will be able to mow whole lawn on one charge.
Cons:
Could not buy locally; if one has to pay for shipping it will likely be quite a bit as mower is heavy.
I'm tall (6'6") and the handle height is a bit low for me and caused me a bit of back strain. I thought I read somewhere that it could be raised so I will look into that. If not, that's something to think about if you are tall.
WHY I BOUGHT IT:
For starters, I'm using this on a 0.2 acre yard. Half is in the front of the house and half in the back. Unless you plan on draining the battery all the way, I wouldn't recommend using this on a yard any bigger than that. As it is, this mower stays strong for the entire duration of the mow. Anyway, the two biggest reasons I bought this are for the low levels of noise and emissions. To put it in perspective, turn a medium sized fan on "high". You'll get the same noise (and emissions) as the mower! It's nice to not have ringing ears and the smell of exhaust on me after finishing the job.
PERFORMANCE:
I've tested this in grass of varying heights, entirely dependent upon how lazy I was the previous week(s) in my mowing. It has no problem cutting normal amounts of grass. It tends to start getting bogged down when you have 3 or more inches of grass being cut but will still chew through pretty much anything. Thanks to the aspens in my yard, I even get the opportunity to mow my own personal aspen grove every single time with trees that are sometimes half an inch thick.
The mower comes up short when it comes to bagging. Even on the best of days, the mower either doesn't have enough power or isn't designed properly to blow all the grass clippings into the bag. With longer grass, you'll end up having to rake about half of what you cut. The mower also has a hard time filling the bag before it clogs the chute so you end up emptying the bag when it's only 1/4 full. I tend to use the mulching attachment and leaving the clippings in the yard.
EASE OF USE:
It blew me away how easy this was to use! I don't understand other customers that couldn't figure certain things out. On a gas mower, you hold the kill bar down on the handle and yank the cord as many times as it takes until the mower starts. On this, you depress a large orange button on the right and hold the kill bar down. The mower has now started with almost zero effort. Incidentally, you DON'T have to hold that button down after the mower is going so long as you're holding down the kill bar. The mower is very light and easy to push. The handle is a soft foam that won't vibrate and numb your hands like a gas mower. Adjusting the deck height is done from a single location, the back right wheel, with easy-to-read markings showing how high it is. The deck is spring loaded, making it easy to adjust with a single hand. Assembling the mower was super easy. At the end of the season, it disassembles down into a neat little package for storage. This would be an excellent purchase for people that want a relatively light lawnmower (about the same weight as a small gas mower) but aren't lazy enough to buy a self propelled unit. You want to make sure you get a LITTLE exercise, right? I thought so. I generally mow with one hand and drink a beer with the other although my lawn is perfectly flat. I recently moved to Connecticut and started using this mower on a lawn with a hill. I've decided I'm not a fan of pushing lawnmowers uphill but if my 5'3, 120 lbs wife can do it, so can I
THE MAGIC OF BATTERIES:
Never again will you have to buy and mix fuel, adjust a carb, pull a starter cord or mess around with spark plugs. The charger can either plug into the handle of the mower or into a port on the removable battery. I tend to leave the mower "wherever" and bring the battery to the charger. By the way, the charger cord is just like a laptop cord: small and compact, as opposed to being a massive and obnoxious cradle/charging bay. The battery itself is fairly heavy, as would be expected from a 36 Volt unit that powers a lawn mower, and may give some people a problem. Keep in mind that you don't necessarily need to remove it just like you don't need to remove the engine to your gas mower every single time.
IN SUMMARY:
Perfect if you have a small yard and aren't too picky about leaving grass clippings behind. I wouldn't recommend this for locations where the grass is usually wet... the mower would have a hard time bagging anything. It works great in dry Utah, though! Feel free to drop me specific questions and I'll answer them ASAP.
UPDATE 2017: I'm not sure if anyone is buying this model anymore since the price seems to have skyrocketed but, for those that are still interested, I thought I'd mention that my battery has just gotten to the point where I'll probably need to replace it. I got 4 seasons of regular use out of this battery, which seems to be a fairly average lifespan for this style of battery
