Norton Commons Elementary Lockdown / Norton Commons. Man driving on 4 wheeler, strapped, and circled the school. My kids in that school. by Trash_Panda_Trading in Louisville

Glad to hear the police were there for carpool. I picked up my daughter at 3:10 and didn’t see any police at the school or elsewhere in the neighborhood.

Louisville has had so many incredible bands over the years. For me I’d say these, in no particular order…

Fostering in Louisville by HeartForFur in Louisville

[–]Mister_Rabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Licensing was quick with the state but I think that’s because we were previously licensed with an agency. It’s been over a decade but IIRC it consisted of attending a couple of classes/meetings and the usual background checks.

Fostering in Louisville by HeartForFur in Louisville

[–]Mister_Rabbit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you’re new to fostering then I would for sure go through the state. We fostered children through both St Josephs and the state, both were very different experiences. We actually took our fostering classes through St Joes and that was a good experience, however we were then placed (for our first experience) with a child who had severe reactive attachment disorder and had already been through dozens of failed placements. From the start it was a very rough experience. Over the course of 9 months we had multiple hospital visits, psychiatric in patient periods, etc. We were absolutely not prepared for the level of care that the child needed. We had another foster following that one that ended up exploding after a month or so with similar issues.

Once we started exploring the state option we learned that our experience wasn’t uncommon at all. The way it was explained to us, by other experienced foster parents, is that all children are initially put in to the state system. From there they will usually be placed with foster families or, depending on their level of trauma or special needs, go to a psychiatric hospital for evaluation and treatment. The children who end up bouncing around to multiple foster families will often end up going to group residential programs, like St Josephs. The result is that St Josephs usually ends up with children that are much harder to place due to special needs, children that have already had several failed placements and have unfortunately built up a good deal of street smarts and emotional defenses.

When we started fostering through the state it was quite a different and much easier experience. We still heard horror stories from the social workers but we also heard, and saw, success stories.

Whichever way you go know that you’re going to experience a good deal of red tape, quite possibly some placements that aren’t a good fit, and what is most definitely an emotional roller coaster. But, if you stick with it and build up your patience, you’ll find it to be an incredibly rewarding experience, and a service that is desperately needed by so many kids.

sarino vs bar vetti by Ok-Classic1603 in Louisville

[–]Mister_Rabbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

bar Vetti definitely gets my vote.

They ARE a little pricey but I know years ago they actively discouraged tipping as they paid all of their employees an actual living wage. It resulted in higher menu prices but the staff seemed super comfortable and the overall bill wasn’t any more than what you’d expect after factoring in taxes. One of those things I always liked about them.

I’ve only been to the Nulu location once so I’m not sure if that’s still the case.

Maya Bagel Express for sure, at Poplar Level and Hess Ln. They’re fairly new, family owned and operated, and very, very, very good. Well worth the drive from anywhere in the city.

Pull a Part, Bessler’s by the airport, and Amen out in Shepherdsville are my go to junkyards. All three have websites where you can check current inventory of cars on the lot.

Louisville car scene by cbcarguy in Louisville

[–]Mister_Rabbit 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in and around the Louisville car scene for 20+ years. Organized racing series at Ohio Valley, worked with shops to promote contests, seen racing move all around Louisville metro, and have seen (and helped) the community evolve from small scattered in person meets to good size online communities that organize great meets and shows. There are few spots around town where I can’t recall something car related happening. I stick to myself for the most part these days but I still have more than enough friends in the scene to have a good feel of what’s going on.

So, with that said, I can confidently say this… what you described is not the Louisville car scene. Not by a long shot. Ask anyone who frequented 11th street, has lined up for grudge races at Ohio Valley, participated in a Toys for Tots cruise, etc and they’ll agree.

Car folks can do some dumb stuff for sure, but the take overs and all that showing up on social media are a completely different level of stupid. What you describe is social media posturing, that just happens to involve cars.

It’s like comparing sanctioned / organized boxing to some kids fighting and jumping someone in the school parking lot.

What has become standard today in gaming that you despise? by AinsleyHarriott64 in gaming

[–]Mister_Rabbit 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Probably showing my age here, and I feel like a lot of this has already been said, but here we go:

  • The monetization of everything. Battle passes, seasons, DLC, etc. It’s all so unnecessary and only exists for corporate greed.

  • Streaming. I will probably never understand how video game streaming became such a huge industry. As someone who played a lot of video games growing up and who now has kids I see a paradigm shift in the culture around gaming, a shift that seems to be heavily influenced by streaming culture. People no longer play games, instead they play games and narrate every, single, thing, they do on screen. And now computer gaming all but requires RGB lighting (on everything!), and ‘gaming chairs’, and headsets, etc. It’s just become such a stereotype.

  • Requiring a network connection. Way more often than not, obviously with the exception of online/multiplayer, gaming should not require an internet connection.

  • Updates. The constant, huge, updates. If I haven’t played a game in 2-3 days it seems like a sure thing that it’ll have to install a 2GB+ update before launching. That’s insane. Maybe monthly patches, with the occasional hot fix, but it’s crazy just how many games pull down large patches multiple times a week.

Ok, back to yelling at kids on my lawn with their rock music and weird clothes.

Southbend all the way. Latest one I’ve installed was a stage 1 in my VR6 MK2 that I drive pretty regularly, it’s held great since 2018 and is super easy to live with on a daily driver.

Steel nail w/ number 31 on the head by Mister_Rabbit in whatisthisthing

[–]Mister_Rabbit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found while cleaning out my elderly mother’s house. Shaped like a nail, made out of what feels like steel, with ‘31’ on the head. Approximately 2 1/8” long. Obviously seems like a nail but I’ve never seen one with raised characters.
