Presser to deliver keynote at mental health law conference

Toronto criminal lawyer Jill Presser will deliver the keynote address at the third annual Mental Disorder and Criminal Justice Conference: Beyond Fitness and NCR — Mental Health in Criminal Justice.

Presser, principal of Presser Barristers, will join legal writing coach Caroline Mandell to remember the late Justice Marc Rosenberg and his contribution to mental disorder law and access to justice.

The conference, hosted by the Criminal Lawyers’ Association and the Law and Mental Disorder Association, will be held Saturday, April 28 at 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m at the FCP Gallery, First Canadian Place, 100 King St. W., in Toronto. There will also be a live webcast for those unable to attend in person.

The event features leading practitioners who will discuss ethical and professional pitfalls, and offer strategies to successfully manage cases involving a wide variety of mental health issues, says the conference website.

“Increasingly, individuals with mental health issues are becoming entangled in the criminal justice system. These clients present unique challenges for defence counsel. Solicitor-client relationships may be complicated, and the law is no simpler. Defence counsel require specialized knowledge and skills to deal with psychiatric issues that crop up throughout the criminal law process,” it says.

The conference offers one hour of professional content accredited by the Law Society of Ontario, 40 minutes of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion professionalism content, and is eligible for up to three hours, 10 minutes of substantive hours.
