Karri 'Karri Knight' in the Valle de Canas, Valle de Canas, Centro, Portugal

This page contains specific information about karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor) '8314', which can be found in the Valle de Canas in Valle de Canas (municipality of Coimbra).

This tree is called "Karri Knight". Dr. Dean Nicolle, an Australian scientist specialising in Eucalyptus (see: http://www.dn.com.au/index.html), visited Spain and Portugal in November 2010 to see some of the largest and tallest Eucalyptus in these countries. He was accompanied by Gustavo Iglesias and other foresters. The "Karri Knight", a Eucalyptus diversicolor, was already known as the tallest tree of the Iberian peninsula. It is surrounded by several other eucalypts of different species of over 60 m tall as well as the tallest Bunya (Araucaria bidwillii) measured anywhere.

The Karri Knight now is the tallest reliably measured tree in Europe. Perhaps in the Caucasus there are specimens of Caucasian fir (Abies nordmanniana) which are taller, as they have been reported up to 85 m, but first they have to be measured reliably.

For a report with photos by Dean Nicolle, see: http://git-forestry-blog.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated

In September 2015 a team from the UK with arborist Syd Howells, climbing expert Vicky Tough and photographer Andrew Walmsley climbed this tree and measured it to be 72.9 metre. They spent two days as well as a night up in the tree. For the story see: http://www.tentsile.com/blogs/news/53682948-karri-karri-knight-a-night-of-wonder

Girth growth rate

The girth was measured more than once:
YearGirth @1.3 mMeasurementGirth growth rate
20105.68 mDean Nicolle-
20175.71 mGiant Trees Foundation0.4 cm/year

The growth rate shown in the table shows the yearly average increase in girth since the last measurement. This value only gives an indication of the growth rate, since every measurement could be done at slightly different heights and during different periods of the year.

Height

The height was measured more than once:
YearHeightMeasurementMeasurement method
2010-1172 m Dean NicolleLaser with Two-point measurement (e.g. Nikon Forestry 550/Pro) - sine method
2015-0972.90 mSyd HowellsClimbing with direct tape drop

Each measurement can be done with varying accuracy. This tree germinated / was planted around the year 1890 ± 10, which makes it around 129 ± 10 years old (Jeroen Philippona, May 12, 2012).
