Description
Want to know what’s going on with the next version of Microsoft Office OneNote? I know I did. That’s why I was thrilled to find this informative article on David Rasmussen’s blog (by way of Jamie Thomson) which details how OneNote 2010 is going to change from the formidable note-taking app that it is today to something even better.
Perhaps the most exciting features coming to OneNote (well, in my opinion) are the new ways you’ll be able to take your notes with you anywhere you go. Although OneNote 2007 already offers offline capabilities and sync today, the new version will expand on that with mobile and web applications and a “sync to cloud” service. Specifically, the new OneNote will offer the following:
- Sync to Cloud (Windows Live): In addition to being able to sync to storage devices like USB drives and SharePoint, the next version of OneNote is going to sync to the Windows Live service (aka “the cloud”) so your notebooks are available from any computer, any time. There aren’t a lot of details on how exactly this is going to work, but I’m definitely excited to check this out.
- OneNote Web App: With the web application, part of the online Office suite of web apps, you’ll be able to access and edit your entire notebook from a browser. That’s true even if you’re on a machine that doesn’t have OneNote installed.
- OneNote Mobile: A more complete OneNote version for Windows Mobile phones will sync whole notebooks and will sync directly to the cloud.
The updated OneNote application will also offer improved sharing and collaboration features, better ways to organize and find your notes, editing improvements, and more. For a detailed list of these changes, check out the blog post here.

Yeah, this looks to be a major update and real embrace of OneNote. I'll be curious if the Web App and Mobile versions will provide search capabilities.
