Sydney homes safe from fire in southwest

Water-bombing helicopters have operated over suburbs in Sydney's southwest to quell a bushfire threatening nearby homes.

The fire burned more than 60 hectares between Voyager Point and Hammondville, causing the temporary closure of the M5 motorway due to thick black smoke.

NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW Fire and Rescue crews were able to slow its run towards the motorway and were on Sunday trying to contain the blaze.

"Currently, there is no threat to homes in the area," the RFS said on Sunday afternoon.
