    BREAKING: Low-income New Yorkers will get discounts on their utility bills between June-October to protect them from severe heat waves and economic insecurity due to COVID-19. This relief will drastically reduce heat-related illness and death and stop the spread of Covid in NYC.

    STATEMENT FROM DIRECTOR MARK CHAMBERS 6/11, 2020, NY – The Public Service Commission took an important action today to provide emergency electric utility bill relief for hundreds of thousands of vulnerable New Yorkers. Today’s decision helps alleviate the fear that some New Yorkers face of having to choose between turning on an air conditioner during a heatwave or paying for food, medicine and rent. The initiative will provide up to $140 in savings on utility bills for 441,000 households this summer. Covid-19 and extreme heat disproportionately impact Black and brown communities, people with low income, and people with disabilities. Today’s outcome is one part of the City’s comprehensive program to ensure that New York City continues to respond to Covid-19, while also adapting to climate impacts like extreme heat, which is the City’s most deadly weather event. We thank the Public Service Commission for taking this important stance and achieving this outcome that will help New Yorkers.
