Designers are now threatening this account, and me, Eli’s intern. I urge you sign up for Eli’s newsletter before it’s too late. Please retweet and tell your friends to sign up for the newsletter too. Eli has lots more to say about design:

They came for Eli Schiff, and I said nothing… so I’m saying something. Eli picked a lot of fights. It’s not hard to imagine he took it too far and did something worthy of suspension. But he had a design perspective we hardly ever see and still need.

Wokeness is very often a rational (and, so far, rather effective) strategy for 75th-percentile professionals to create job openings by ousting 95th-percentile professionals. It's genius. Call "racist" anyone who is too brutally competent, too impatient with errors.

It speaks strongly in favor of my interpretation here that part of Eli's whole public crusade as a designer, as I understand it, is calling out this generalization of mediocrity in design standards (celebrated as more ethical or humane, when really it's just cynical careerism).

This is where we have to be honest about the much larger political and economic reality of contemporary techno-acceleration. The people who want to outlaw the Eli Schiffs from professional life *want his job.* There aren't many high-paying salaries for artists & creatives.

The strongest data point for the anti-Eli gang is that Eli calls the taxi driver "barely human." Presumably, the super woke types (& the algorithm perhaps) seized on this more than anything. That's vicious, no doubt. But I might call myself "barely human" upon waking (b4 coffee).

    Replying to

Tech ppl of a certain set control Twitter and they don't like Eli and have wanted to be rid of him for years , that's all it is

So overall, what really seems to be happening, in the case of someone like Eli, is that there's a move to effectively outlaw from positions of influence/high-income, a *certain type of person,* whose traits make them extremely good at one thing, but very mean about others.

But the ferocity with which this little cabal of designers is gleefully celebrating Eli's suspension of Twitter, is way more consistent with precisely what Eli's been warning. Just like in academia, so it is in the design world: Cynical mediocre bureaucrats will take everything.

Everyone has moments where they say insanely mean things, even to loved ones. What's going on now is that if you happen to be cursed with a conservative temperament & you're a highly exacting, disagreeable man — A LOT of people want to make this straight up illegal. Why?

Just as I acknowledged the line in his thread most charitable to the case of the critics, one also has to acknowledge where Eli explicitly says he doesn’t blame the taxi driver. That his vitriol is for American policies that exploit what he sees as the least capable people.

  15. Eli's being falsely accused of so much terrible stuff. One of the more ridiculous examples is allegedly hacking and doxxing people. Eli's literally the guy who argued Designers Shouldn't Code, but somehow he's a proficient hacker Don't believe what you read. Opportunist dogpile
