HISTORY

Producers Workshop was one of the most historically important recording studios in Hollywood. Not only did Pink Floyd park there for 3 months to perfect The Wall, but hundreds of other artists were using this room for tracking, mixing, overdubs and scores.

Just a few years before Producer’s Workshop began, it was called Continental Studios. Where bands like Quicksilver Messenger Service, Moby Grape, The Standells, The Lettermen, The Chocolate Watch Band and many others. Not much is known about the ownership of the early incarnation of the studio. However sometime around 1970-71, Seymour Heller (Liberace’s manager) bought the studio and started Producer’s Workshop.

Liberace recorded many records at Producers. Some recordings he made as early as 1967. It is said that he fell in love with the Baldwin grand piano at Producers. It seems Seymour had his eye on the room a few years before he took it over. Ed Cobb was also very involved with Producers early on. He was part of a disco label called AVI, which started in 1974 by Seymour Heller. Most of what they released ended up being library music. There was nothing of large note in the disco world recorded at Producers that we know of. However the early 1970’s, artists like Carly Simon, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, James Taylor and many more, started coming to Producers.

Ringo Starr recorded both is first record Ringo as well as Goodnight Vienna at Producers in the early 70’s which featured guest artists such as; John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, Elton John, George Harrison, Paul McCartney. Carly Simon recorded most of Hotcakes featuring the famed duet with James Taylor, “Mocking Bird.”

By the mid to late 70’s Producer’s was serving the likes of Neil Diamond who recorded the duet with Barbara Streisand, “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers.” Art Garfunkel’s Breakaway was also recorded at Producer’s with Richard Perry producing. Richard had also done the first two Ringo records at Producer’s. Bob Ezrin was first here with Alice Cooper working on Whiskey and Lace which may have been what enticed him to bring Pink Floyd to finish off The Wall. RECORD AT PRODUCER'S!

After Producer's, the space was turned into Westbeach Recorders. It has now been Boulevard Recording for the last 5 years. It's still at the same location and address. The only real difference is that Doug Sax's Mastering Lab has now been turned into The Museum of Death! Don't be freightened. They're actually wonderful neighbors and if you're into the history of famous California murders, it's worth a trip! But if you ask nicely, they'll still let you go back to where the mix room was for Producer's. This is the mixroom where The Wall, Rumours, Whiskey and Lace and many other records were mixed.
