Utah’s primaries will take place on Super Tuesday. In the 2016 general election, Donald Trump won the state with 45.54% of the vote, compared with Hillary Clinton’s 27.46%. Utah is one of the most Republican states in the nation. It has not elected a Democratic governor since 1980 or a Democratic senator since 1970, or voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964. Utah provided George W. Bush and Mitt Romney (now one of the state’s US senators) with their largest margins of victory, and John McCain’s third-best margin. Despite recent GOP success in Utah, Trump won only a little more than 45% in 2016. That performance was partly due to Evan McMullin, an independent conservative Mormon who picked up 21% in his home state.
