Overview

The 1984 Winter Olympic ski jumping events were held at a complex built on the Igman Mountain to the southwest of Sarajevo. As in previous Games two events were held, the normal 70 m hill and the large hill 90 m hill. Two youngsters dominated the Games as 19-year-old East German [Jens Weißflog] would share the limelight with [Matti Nykänen] of Finland, who was a year older. Weißflog won on the normal hill with Nykänen whilst the order was reversed on the large hill. The location was the scene of heavy fighting during the Yugoslav Civil War and was reported to have been used as a site for executions during the conflict.
