INVASION PLANET EARTH -- DVD Review by Porfle

Most alien invasion movies are a mixture of elements from other alien invasion movies, hopefully with enough new angles and fresh ideas to give them a jolt of originality.

INVASION PLANET EARTH (2019) is a good example--it's a little "War of the Worlds", a little "Independence Day", a bit of "When Worlds Collide", some "2001: A Space Odyssey", and a big dash of brand new stuff to make it worth plunging into.

Thomas Dunn (Simon Haycock, WASP) and his wife Mandy (Lucy Drive, ZOMBIE MASSACRE 2: REICH OF THE DEAD) are pregnant again after losing their first daughter at an early age, but before this ray of sunshine can pierce the veil of their somber existence, the world is invaded by thousands of alien gunships swarming out of an orbiting mothership while Thomas, Mandy, and certain other humans begin having terrifying visions of a nuclear apocalypse.

The mystery of just what these aliens are up to spices up all the familiar plot elements, with the alien ships zapping people and transporting them into oblong containers with windows through which they can helplessly observe countless others being similarly abducted.

Strangely, all the troubled mental patients in the facility where Thomas works are coming out of the experience seemingly cured of their mental and emotional maladies, after having some really weird, personalized mental delusions. (One of them imagines a full-scale zombie invasion.)

Then, an interesting sort of wormhole/stargate effect whisks them into a land of who-knows-where in which Tom's childhood desire to save the world like his sci-fi hero "Kaleidoscope Man" prompts him to engage in some pleasingly heroic exploits.

Meanwhile, Mandy's stuck back on Earth as her grade school class breaks up due to impending world destruction (the alien invasion comes just as the nations of the Earth are on the brink of nuclear war) and she's forced to flee for her life while wondering where the heck her husband is at the moment.

Through her eyes we see cities destroyed, masses of people in blind panic being either abducted or vaporized by nuclear blasts, and other horrors.  It's here, amidst some stunningly-rendered cityscapes, that the film's apocalyptic imagery is at its most intense and affecting.

With all of these exciting science-fiction elements in play, it's too bad director and co-writer Simon Cox (DRIVEN) is working with a much lower budget than any of the previously mentioned sci-fi classics.

This means that while the effects we see during most of the film's running time serve to adequately convey the more mindblowing elements of the story, they rarely rise to the level of the more opulent sci-fi blockbusters.

Still, the sheer amount of colorful, frenetic, and sometimes dazzling effects compensates for their lack of Hollywood production gloss.

At any rate, once INVASION PLANET EARTH gets fired up it plunges forward like a blue streak and carries us along with it through some wildly imaginative territory to a pleasingly unexpected ending.  Low-budget ambience aside, it's got the most important features of absorbing sci-fi, which are imagination and a deeply-felt sense of wonder.

FLCL: PROGRESSIVE & ALTERNATIVE COMBO PACK -- Blu-ray Review by Porfle

(Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own.)

If you like frenetic science-fiction-based anime with an emphasis on quirky teen relationships amidst a visual cacophony of robotic, city-smashing chaos, then Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's 2-disc Blu-ray FLCL: PROGRESSIVE & ALTERNATIVE COMBO PACK (Blu-ray+Digital) should keep you happily occupied for more than a few hours.

It's a two-season sequel to the original 2000 series about a wild young minx named Haruko who rides a Vesper and wields an electric guitar that doubles as a chainsaw, sledgehammer, and various other weapons and devices.

Young people in her vicinity tend to suddenly sprout raging robot monsters from their foreheads, which Haruko gleefully engages in battle with the fate of everything and everyone around her in the balance.

Season two, FLCL: PROGRESSIVE, gives us an appealing new cast of typical middle-school teens of the kind that will be familiar to anime fans, including pretty but pensive Hidomi, her eventual love interest Ide, and his pals Mori and Marco.

Hidomi is never without her headphones, which help block out the world around her, although they also have another, more mysterious purpose.

Into their everyday world blazes Haruko in the guise of a teacher, seducing Ide and drawing Hidomi under her influence to be used in bringing out inter-dimensional robot monsters for her to battle.

This time she has an alter ego in the form of super-cool Jinju, and they share a secret desire to somehow facilitate the return of a powerful being named Atomsk.

Meanwhile, weird things are going on in Hidomi's hometown, particularly a giant flat iron that's parked on the edge of town which will eventually be put into motion by a giant hand from above, mowing down and flattening everything in its path.

This all has to do with a struggle between two forces known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity, agents of which are at work trying to either cause or prevent various disasters from occurring.

But for all its sci-fi sound and fury, the likable teenage characters are what give FLCL its heart and maintain our interest.  Even as the story charges irrevocably toward its catastrophic finale, the emphasis is as much on Hidomi, Ide, and their friends, whose interpersonal relationships we follow even as they begin to play key roles in the impending battle, as on the freaky warrior chick Haruko and other combatants.

FLCL: ALTERNATIVE continues with the return of Haruko, still on her no-holds-barred quest for whatever (it ultimately doesn't really matter), and a timid, insecure young girl named Kana who continually seeks acceptance from her close circle of female friends, each of whom has her own problems.

But even as Haruko somehow stumbles into the role of mentor for this young girl, she also uses her potential mind powers to kick-start Armageddon all over again, this time on a level more cataclysmic than before.

If all this sounds complicated, it's because it is.  In fact, I pretty much gave up trying to keep up with all the different plotlines and such, and just started holding on for dear life as this dizzying succession of eye-candy animation and swirling, surreal imagery went rushing by like a river of watercolors.

Most impressive are the intricate, exquisitely-rendered artwork and full animation, which looks just like traditional cel animation but with digital enhancements.  Character design is semi-realistic for the most part but full of cartoony manga-like silliness and exaggerated reactions, all of which adds to the fun.

As for the battle sequences, the artists and animators let their imaginations run wild with some of the most surreal and dazzling imagery you're likely to see in a series of this kind. The combination of such startling visuals with the sometimes childlike, sometimes mature story themes remains compelling throughout.

Both seasons offer satisfying final episodes, yet FLCL: PROGRESSIVE & ALTERNATIVE COMBO PACK ultimately leaves the door open for more adventures of guitar-slinging wild girl Haruko and another hapless group of youthful protagonists enduring the vagaries of adolescence while caught in a colorful clash of powerful opposing forces.

Explicit, Violent, and Disturbing "WE" Coming Out on DVD/Blu-ray -- See Unrated Or Edited Trailer HERE!

A Group of Millennials Fall off the Morality Cliff in "WE"

Dutch Coming-of-Age Tale Takes an Unflinching Look at Aimless Youth

Artsploitation Films has announced the release We, a film considered controversial even by Artsploitation's admittedly amoral standards.  Director Rene Eller’s lurid, unflinching look at a group of youths and their summer of illicit fun will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on February 18th.

The film, which enjoyed a long festival run (including Rotterdam, Raindance and Rome), is adapted from the novel "Wij" by Elvis Peeters.

During one hot summer, eight privileged but bored suburban teens begin to pull a series of harmless pranks which quickly escalate into increasingly depraved games. Their descent from innocence to ruthless predators involve arson, prostitution, pornography, assault and blackmail. Drenched in bared flesh and naked nihilism the film is reminiscent of the films of Harmony Korine, Larry Clark and Lars von Trier.

Artsploitation Films will release WE on DVD & Blu-ray February 18th and VOD/Streaming April 14th.

NOTE: The DVD and Blu-ray are presented in the original, unedited version. When the film is released on VOD/Streaming in April, most sites (but not all) will offer an edited version, approximately 2 minutes shorter.

The DVD and Blu-ray will offer a reversible wrap:

Saban Films Nabs U.S. Rights To André Øvredal’s Fantasy Adventure "MORTAL" Starring Nat Wolff

SABAN FILMS NABS U.S. RIGHTS TO André Øvredal’S FANTASY ADVENTURE

“MORTAL”

STARRING NAT WOLFF

LOS ANGELES (January 25, 2020) – Saban Films announced today that they have acquired U.S. rights to André Øvredal’s Mortal starring Nat Wolff (Death Note), Iben Akerlie (Victoria), Priyanka Bose (Lion) and Per Frisch (Farewell Illusions).  Written by Øvredal (Trollhunter) and Norman Lesperance (Door to the Other Side), the fantasy adventure is produced by John Einar Hagen, Ben Pugh and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones for Nordisk Film Production, 42 and Automatik. The film is backed by Nordisk Film, Zefyr and Umedia.

Mortal follows Eric (Wolff), an American backpacker in the wilderness of western Norway, who gets arrested after accidentally killing a teenager, and manages to flee with the young psychologist he met during his detention. While on the run, with both Norwegian and American authorities tracking him down, Eric finally discovers he has godlike powers based on ancient Norwegian mythology.

“We love André’s work, from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, to Troll Hunter and The Autopsy of Jane Doe,” said Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley. “This is a coming-of-age origins story but also a genre mashup with Wolff rising as a legend with God-like powers.  Our audiences will love this.”

Bill Bromiley and Ness Saban negotiated the deal for Saban Films along with Endeavor Content on behalf of filmmakers.  TrustNordisk is handling international rights.

Saban Films continues to grow its presence in the industry, remaining active in the acquisition, production and distribution space. The company’s successes have run the gamut from critically acclaimed theatrical films such as The Homesman starring Hilary Swank, to two of the biggest Fathom events with horror icon and heavy metal mastermind Rob Zombie’s 3 From Hell last year and Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, the sequel to the 2001 comedy Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back which the company partnered on after coming onboard at script stage. Its upcoming slate includes: Jason Lei Howden’s Guns Akimbo starring Daniel Radcliffe, Ant Timpson’s Come to Daddy starring Elijah Wood, and Vivarium starring Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg.

I GOT YOU BABE: THE BEST OF SONNY & CHER -- DVD Review by Porfle

I'm old enough to remember watching TV on August 1, 1971 when "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" premiered on CBS. It would go on for four seasons, and I would be right there in front of the TV watching just about every episode.

That's why seeing Time-Life's 5-disc, 10-episode DVD set I GOT YOU BABE: THE BEST OF SONNY & CHER (1971-73) is like playing back actual memories that are still floating around inside my head.

It also rekindles the feelings I had while watching these shows, which consists mainly of a warm fondness for the two leads and a giddy appreciation of the silly, often zonked-out comedy displayed by their onstage comedy bits and frenetic ensemble skits.

Each show begins with the titular couple themselves coming out to perform for the live studio audience, usually singing some clumsy, showbiz version of a popular pop song of the time, before lapsing into their comedy act.

This consists of Sonny reveling in his own inflated ego while the dry, utterly deadpan Cher cuts him down to size (almost literally) with a non-stop arsenal of short jokes, Italian jokes, withering remarks about his sexual prowess, and general putdowns.

This aspect of their act, in fact, is what gave them renewed popularity after their huge chart success during the 60s (with such hits as "I Got You, Babe" and "The Beat Goes On", both of which are used as themes for the show) had wound down and found them struggling in small venues.

Even after their career as a vocal duo had run its course, they were now delighting audiences with this mixture of songs and caustic putdown humor, Sonny brilliantly portraying the insecure schlub and Cher as the dead-shot insult machine (although Sonny could always fire back with jokes about Cher's big nose and American Indian heritage).

With their customary live-audience intro out of the way, each episode then proceeds to avail us with some of the corniest, cringiest comedy skits imaginable, which at the time somehow seemed more "hip" than the usual variety show content but in retrospect are just as old-fashioned as the oldest vaudeville routines.

What livens these moments up are the sheer exuberance shown by Sonny & Cher, who are surprisingly adept at comedy, as well as their celebrity guests who all seem to be having a fun time doing the show.

This is especially true of Tony Curtis when he portrays the corpulent "Detective Fat" (a take-off on the current series "Cannon") and Jerry Lewis, who gets a chance to go nuts with a succession of goofy characters and the silliest comedy routines the writers could devise.  A casual atmosphere that encourages botched lines and improvisation adds to the show's appeal.

Just about all of the guests seem to share this chance to let their hair down, including such names as Jimmy Durante, Carroll O'Connor, Art Carney, Jim Brown, Bobby Vinton, Jim Nabors, and Joe Namath. Even musical guests Dinah Shore, Bobby Vinton, The Supremes, and the Righteous Brothers get into the act.

Among the regular bits that long-time viewers will recall are the memorable "V-A-M-P" skits in which Cher portrays famous historical femme fatales, and spoofs of opera and other highbrow entertainment hosted by an irreverent Freeman King.

Then, after all the silliness had run its course, Sonny & Cher would return for a straight singing segment featuring more of their strident, soulless recycling of past and current pop hits before their traditional goodbye to the audience which consisted of a reprise of their theme song "I Got You, Babe" and often included an appearance by cute-as-a-button daughter Chastity (who is now their son, Chaz).

The final two shows in the set, "The Sonny & Cher Years Special (Parts 1 and 2)", are of interest as retrospectives of their 60s success as well as featuring a cast of musical superstars such as Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Paul Anka, Peter Noone, Neil Sedaka, and the Coasters. Period celebrities Dick Clark, Edd Byrnes, and Wolfman Jack are also on hand to join in the fun.

Oddly, all of these performers are relegated to brief segments of their best songs during a medley that begins each of the two episodes, and then for the rest of the show they participate in the silly comedy skits. It's fun to see them having fun, but I'd think their musical talents would've been given more air time than their comedy chops.

Be that as it may, the series as a whole is a lot of dumb, often wince-inducing fun (thanks in part to great regulars such as Ted Ziegler, Teri Garr, Freeman King, Murray "The Unknown Comic" Langston, and a young, bearded Steve Martin, who was also a writer along with Bob "Super Dave" Einstein).

And as I GOT YOU BABE: THE BEST OF SONNY & CHER demonstrates, Sonny and Cher in their glitzy, showbiz prime, before their eventual divorce and ensuing gossip-mag scandals, were two of the most appealing variety-show entertainers who ever graced our TV screens.

A Roth/Kirschenbaum Films/Team Downey Production

A Film By Stephen Gaghan

"DOLITTLE"

Release Date: January 17, 2020

Robert Downey Jr. electrifies one of literature's most enduring characters in a vivid reimagining of the classic tale of the man who could talk to animals: Dolittle.

After losing his wife (Kasia Smutniak) seven years earlier, the eccentric Dr. John Dolittle (Downey), famed doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria's England, hermits himself away behind the high walls of Dolittle Manor with only his menagerie of exotic animals for company.

But when the young queen (Jessie Buckley, Wild Rose) falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure, regaining his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and discovers wondrous creatures.

The doctor is joined on his quest by a young, self-appointed apprentice (Dunkirk's Harry Collett) and a raucous coterie of animal friends, including an anxious gorilla (Oscar® winner Rami Malek), an enthusiastic but bird-brained duck (Oscar® winner Octavia Spencer), a bickering duo of a cynical ostrich (The Big Sick's Kumail Nanjiani) and an upbeat polar bear (John Cena, Bumblebee) and a headstrong parrot (Oscar® winner Emma Thompson), who serves as Dolittle's most trusted advisor and confidante.

The film also stars Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen (The Queen), Oscar® winner Jim Broadbent and Carmel Laniado (FX's A Christmas Carol) and voice performances from Tom Holland, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez, Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard, Frances de la Tour, Jason Mantzoukas and Craig Robinson.

Directed by Academy Award® winner Stephen Gaghan (Syriana, Traffic), Dolittle is produced by Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum under their Roth/Kirschenbaum Films (Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent) and Susan Downey (Sherlock Holmes franchise, The Judge) for Team Downey.

GREGORY'S GIRL -- Blu-ray Review by Porfle

I remember seeing the promo for GREGORY'S GIRL (1980) back in the early 80s when it was on Cinemax, and although it looked harmless enough, I had no desire to actually watch it except maybe for the novelty of seeing Altered Images lead singer Clare Grogan in an acting role.

Now, however, I'm no longer trudging through the 80s but looking back on them through a haze of nostalgia, so the idea of watching this endearingly easygoing teen comedy appeals to me.

Oddly, it opens with what appears to be a sop to the PORKY'S crowd, with Gregory (Gordon John Sinclair, BRITANNIA HOSPITAL, LOCAL HERO, WORLD WAR Z) and his mates excitedly watching a young nurse disrobe in front of her window.

But they're not actually pressing their noses against the glass or peering into a hole drilled in a shower wall. In fact, they appear to be watching this apparent act of exhibitionism from behind a tree across the street.  Not exactly a gang of lechers, these lads. (One of them even faints.) I would've stopped to look too.

The nice thing we discover about Gregory is that he's really just a normal high school kid who's well-meaning enough despite the usual faults. He's a tad irresponsible, doesn't take life all that seriously, and tends to be a stranger to his parents (the latter point is played for gentle laughs in a nice scene between Gregory and his driving-instructor dad, who we never see again).

He doesn't even get upset when his football coach tells him he's moving him from lead kicker to goalie and trying out new talent for their perpetually-losing team.  This sets up the story's main plotline when a beautiful, athletic girl named Dorothy (Dee Hepburn, "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie") tries out and blows everyone else away with her skills, while stealing the lovesick Gregory's heart at the same time.

What follows is one of the most low-key and pleasantly realistic coming-of-age comedies that one could while away some time with.  Gregory's attempts to overcome his shyness and make progress with the seemingly unattainable Dorothy are easily relatable and never played for cheap laughs.

And when his little sister Madeline (Allison Forster) tries to give him first-hand advice about girls even though she's years away from any actual romantic experience herself, it's heartwarming. Through it all, Gregory is so lighthearted and happy-go-lucky that even the agonies of teenage love can't keep him from strolling through life with a smile on his face.

Writer-director Bill Forsyth (LOCAL HERO) captures the flavor of smalltown Scotland with this pleasant diversion in which the teachers are barely out of school themselves (Gregory's mousey football coach is proud that his moustache is growing in) and his pals are interested in such things as photography, baking black market goodies in Home Ec to sell after school, and, of course, girls.

Or, in the case of his likably timid friend Andy (Robert Buchanan), standing on an overpass watching trucks go by because he read that so many tons of corn flakes pass beneath it every day.

All of this culminates in a delightful sequence in which Gregory's date with Dorothy goes from a non-event (she doesn't show up) to a lovely scheme by his other female friends to set him up with the girl who really has feelings for him.

This is where Altered Images lead singer Clare Grogan ("Red Dwarf") comes to the fore as classmate Susan, who joins Gregory for an evening of simply passing the time together.

That's what watching GREGORY'S GIRL is like, and what gives it such an unassuming charm.  It's not often that I enjoy a movie so much simply because it's such an effortlessly placid and comforting look at everyday life and the modest pleasures that can be derived from living it.

KRYPTON: THE COMPLETE SECOND & FINAL SEASON -- Blu-ray Review by Porfle

(Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray TM I reviewed in this blog post.  The opinions I share are my own.)

Having missed the first season of this show, I couldn't make heads or tails of many of these character names and their motives.  For a while anyway, it's a bit tedious for those without photographic memories or some kind of mental filing system for keeping it all sorted out.

But somewhere around the second or third episode of KRYPTON: THE COMPLETE SECOND & FINAL SEASON things started to fall into place and the story actually got rather involving. Not terribly so, but enough for me to enjoy the rest of the season without a scorecard.

What it is, basically, is glorified space opera (which is a good thing, by the way) that reminded me a lot of the "Flash Gordon" serials that I grew up with, featuring fancifully futuristic societies and characters that are either admirably purehearted or hissably evil.

The comparison is also apt in that each episode always has a cliffhanger ending--you can almost hear the announcer exhorting us to come back to the theater same time next week--coming at the climax of much science-fantasy-type melodrama and derring-do.

The big difference is that this show has all the modern technical advantages of CGI and a generous budget to give us spectacular planetary vistas, raging monsters (such as the incredibly hostile behemoth Doomsday), and cityscapes brilliantly alight and swarming with flying craft.

I did, however, find the production design to be on the dark and murky side at times, as though Krypton sometimes had trouble paying its light bill.  And some shots seemed to lean so heavy on the CGI frou-frou as to make one yearn for the days of occasional visual austerity.

All that aside, the complicated multi-level plotlines do weave themselves together into quite a saga involving two of Krypton's main houses, El and Zod, which end up on opposite sides of a massive revolution.

During this increasingly cataclysmic clash, our hero Seg-El (a likable Cameron Cuffe), the grandfather of Kal-El (whom Earth will someday know as "Superman"), is pitted in mortal opposition to the murderous tyrant General Dru-Zod (powerfully portrayed by Colin Salmon of the Brosnan-era "James Bond" films), the show's ruthless equivalent to Ming the Merciless who rules the city of Kandor with an iron fist and is intent on conquering the universe.

A myriad of supporting characters include Seg-El's love Lyta-Zod (Georgina Campbell), who will inexplicably align with Dru-Zod against the rebels.  (Did I mention that Dru-Zod is the son of the younger Seg-El and Lyta-Zod? It's a time travel thing.) Also of note is Nyssa-Vex (Wallis Day), mother of Seg-El's son Cor-vex, who will someday be renamed Jor-El and become Kal-El's father.

But seeking to prevent Kal-El from one day traveling to Earth and becoming his arch-enemy Superman is the really, really evil cyborg Brainiac, also a time traveler but with the insidious ability to enter Seg-El's body and use him toward his own malevolent ends. (Their interactions provide some of the most entertaining scenes.)

There's also yet another character displaced in time, Earth man Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos), the show's main comedy relief (he's sort of a Seth Green type) who comes from a future Earth devastated by Brainiac and is trying to keep that from happening. A dozen or so additional characters of note add to the action and drama.

The dialogue fluctuates between mock-Shakespearean and unexpectedly coarse (much of the humor is scatological) but the cast perform it all with conviction. This is especially true of Colin Salmon's Dru-Zod, a fitting predecessor to the familiar General Zod from the "Superman" movies.

The 2-disc Blu-ray from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment contains all ten one-hour episodes and is in 16x9 widescreen with English 5.1 audio and subtitles in English and French. The bonus menu consists of two featurettes, "The Fate of Superman" and "Villains: Modes of Persuasion." There are also instructions for digital download.

For those who enjoy the old serials as I do, it won't matter that KRYPTON: THE COMPLETE SECOND & FINAL SEASON doesn't quite embody the finest of the sci-fi genre.  It's quite sufficient as a lively, intense, complex, colorful, sometimes eye-pleasing, always involving chapter play, culminating in a final blazing battle between good and evil with the fate of the entire galaxy in the balance.
