Say Yes Scholar Story

Harvard sounds very, very far away for a lot of high school students. It certainly did for Betty Lulseged. “I didn’t want to apply, because I thought there was no way. I thought I was throwing away my application fee.” With a little encouragement from Dad, the Northwest Guilford student applied to Harvard and was accepted in Spring of 2016. “It completely blew my mind,” she remembers.

Our Partners

Efforts like Say Yes Guilford need support from civic leaders, funders, institutions of higher education and policymakers – all in pursuit of developing the gifts and talents of young people. We believe that when a community comes together, it has the capacity to effectively and sustainably redefine expectations and to build pathways to postsecondary education and careers.

Our Community

What does bringing Say Yes to Education Guilford mean for our students, parents, and community?

More Support

Through a comprehensive support system in 12 pilot schools, Guilford County Schools students have access to the services they need to graduate from high school and be prepared for postsecondary success.

Economic Change

Businesses have good reason to start operations or relocate to Guilford County — a more educated workforce, access for employees to tuition scholarships and supports, and solid schools. Other Say Yes communities have seen growth in the tax base and experienced rising property values, too.

College Access

Postsecondary tuition can be expensive. Say Yes Guilford’s scholarship program is designed to make college more affordable. Eligible Guilford County Schools graduates will receive “last dollar” tuition-only scholarships to be used toward attaining a college degree or post-secondary certificate.

Say Yes was founded in 1987 by money manager George Weiss, who promised to prepare 112 Philadelphia sixth graders for college, and to pay their college tuition if they graduated high school. Say Yes now helps entire communities make a similar commitment to every public high school student. Say Yes Guilford was launched in September 2015.
