Copyright First Responders graduates Cohort 2The Harvard Library Office for Scholarly Communication is pleased to announce the graduation of the second cohort of Copyright First Responders.
The Copyright First Responder service was developed in response to a need identified by Kyle K. Courtney, the Harvard Library Office for Scholarly Communication’s Copyright Advisor. While at the Harvard Law School Library, Courtney noticed the growing number of copyright questions he was receiving, many of which arose from recent changes in copyright law that had implications for libraries and their users.
In response, Courtney developed an immersion program to empower a cohort of 14 Harvard librarians to answer copyright questions from the University’s faculty, administrators, students, and fellow librarians. Since their graduation, this group of CFRs has worked with HarvardX to vet third-party
materials used in courses, developed a copyright resource for the Gen Ed program, presented J-Term courses on IP issues, and served as the primary point of contact for their coworkers and communities, answering copyright concerns. The second CFR cohort, consisting of 12 Harvard Library staff members, has completed their training and will now join the inaugural group in attending monthly meetings, participating in the group’s listserv and wiki, and establishing themselves as copyright resources, thereby expanding the program’s reach. As the CFR program continues to become an established service, Courtney plans to experiment with nimble modular programs for targeted communities (e.g., Archives and case study programs), develop copyright-related policy for the Library, and create a “good practices” guide for other institutions interested in establishing CFR programs. Courtney aims to launch a third CFR cohort in the summer. For those interested in joining or making use of the program, please contact the Office for Scholarly Communication at osc@harvard.edu.
