The James Madison Program is pleased to announce that Dr. Allen C. Guelzo, currently Henry R. Luce Professor of the Civil War Era and Director of Civil War Era Studies at Gettysburg College, has accepted an appointment at Princeton University, where he will be a Senior Research Scholar in the Council of the Humanities and Director of the Initiative on Politics and Statesmanship in the James Madison Program.

Dr. Guelzo is an acclaimed scholar of American history whose writings have been recognized as among the most important contributions to scholarly and public understanding of 19^th century America.  His book Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President received the 2000 Lincoln Prize, as well as the 2000 Book Prize of the Abraham Institute of the Mid-Atlantic.  His Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation: The End of Slavery in America Emancipation and his Gettysburg: The Last Invasion also received the Lincoln Prize in 2005 and 2013, respectively. Dr. Guelzo is also a leading authority on the life and thought of Jonathan Edwards.

A winner of the 2018 Bradley Prize, Guelzo earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of Pennsylvania.  He also holds an honorary Doctorate of History from Lincoln College.

Speaking of Dr. Guelzo, Robert P. George, Director of the James Madison Program, said, “What a blessing it is to welcome to our community a scholar of the eminence of Allen Guelzo.  His colleagueship and teaching will enrich the intellectual life of the Madison Program, the Council of the Humanities, and Princeton University.”

As Director of the Initiative on Politics and Statesmanship, Dr. Guelzo will help our students to understand and appreciate the qualities of leadership that are necessary to maintain ordered liberty in a constitutional republic.  “I can think of no scholar,” George said, “more qualified to impart this invaluable knowledge.”

Dr. Guelzo will assume his new responsibilities on September 1, 2019.
