Juha van Ingen: AS Long As Possible & conversation with the artist

A solo exhibition of work by Juha van Ingen will open at SometimeStudio on 10th October 2019. The presentation includes recent digital prints Stripe Portraits and digital loops.

In relation to Juha van Ingen’s exhibition in SometimeStudio, the Institut finlandais exhibits for one day (on 11th October from 10:00 a.m to 7:00 p.m.) Van Ingen’s iconic ASLAP (AS Long As Possible), a 1000-year GIF loop. ASLAP was started in the Kiasma museum in Helsinki on 28th March 2017 at 12:00 EEST and will be kept playing uninterruptedly until the year 3017 in the collection of The National Gallery of Finland. The animation in Helsinki is not on public display at the moment so the visitors of the Institut finlandais are the only people on the planet to see the frames 122258 to 122307 of the GIF animation for the next 1000 years! Additionally, a discussion will be held in the auditorium (from 5.00 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.), with an introduction by Alexandre Michaan, freelance media art conservator. Participating in the discussion are Juha van Ingen, Philippe Bettinelli, the curator at CNAP, and Virginie Lemarchand, who is in charge of the collection and restoration of works at Frac Franche-Comté. The work by Juha van Ingen will serve as a starting point to a discussion about ASLAP and its surviving for the upcoming 1000 years and, more generally, about digital art and its preservation strategies.

The exhibition of works by Juha van Ingen at SometimeStudio and the presentation of ASLAP at Institut finlandais is initiated by heritage curator Cécile Dazord. The event at Institut finlandais is held in collaboration with SometimeStudio. The presentation of ASLAP and the exhibition in SometimeStudio is supported by The Arts Promotion Centre Finland and Frame Contemporary Art Finland.
