Miles M.18 Mk.II ‘G-AHKY’

c/n 4426.

Built 1939.

Only three M.18s were built and this was the only Mk.II. It had the fin moved forward on the fuselage and was powered by a 150hp Blackburn Cirrus Major III. It was allocated the British military serial HM545 when used for evaluation trials but despite having better handling than the Magister then in service it was believed to lack robustness and was not ordered.

On display in the Civil Aviation Hangar at the National Museum of Flight (part of National Museums Scotland).

East Fortune Airfield, East Lothian, Scotland.

From the museum website:-

“In 1948 Brian Iles bought this aircraft. He flew it in many air races, with great success. He won the Goodyear Trophy Air Race in 1956, the 1956 and 1957 British Air Racing Championships, the Osram Cup Air Race in 1957 and the King’s Cup Air Race in 1961.”
