Residents upset about George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis and other police brutality issues took to the city streets in peaceful protest.

CANTON What started as a smallish protest Friday evening continued to grow.

Residents upset about George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis and police brutality in general took to the city streets in peaceful protest.

Only a handful had gathered downtown around 6:15 p.m. when the event was planned. But the numbers soon swelled well beyond 100.

As of 8:30 p.m., the large crowd continued to parade along Tuscarawas Street, holding up traffic in spots. They later stopped at Central Plaza.

Chants of "I can’t breathe" could be heard.

Mayor Thomas Bernabei has been with the crowd throughout the protest. Police are monitoring the situation and no violence has occurred.
