Update from #KCMO City Plan Commission. It was a long one and I'm tired but @ScottKCMO told me I wouldn't be able to keep up with my updates. Don't underestimate how much your haters can motivate you. drive.google.com/file/d/185Hofy…
A lot of requested continuances. Those indicated on the docket to be heard at another meeting were continued. Some were heard and continued but I'll explain those below.
Case 2.1 and 2.2 were parking lot modifications and additional parking for the KCPT building at 125 E. 31st street. There was some debate about signage and misc. issues. I voted yes with some hesitations. Image

1) A quick thread on the debt of gratitude that liberalism -- by which I mean society governed by universal rights, political equality, and the rule of law -- owes to LGBT rights litigators.
2) The Supreme Court's very first gay rights decision -- or, at least, the first case where gay rights prevailed -- was Romer v. Evans (1996). It involved a Colorado state constitutional amendment forbidding any state or municipal law providing for LGB equality.
3) Romer was the mildest civil rights opinion imaginable. It's holding was that states may not enact laws motivated solely by "animus toward the class it affects."

If the sole purpose of a law is hate, the law is struck down. If the law serves any other purpose. no problem.

With all that's going on you may not have followed the Voice of America story. Senate confirmed a Steve Bannon associate to lead VOA's parent agency on June 4. Saturday we learned CDC blacklisted VOA in April. Monday VOA's Director & Deputy resigned. VOA is being Breitbartized.
Though VOA is run by the govt, it built a reputation for objectivity. That's about to change under the leadership of Steve Bannon associate Michael Pack. The news that he's purging VOA's leadership is alarming. The Breitbart crowd may be getting a taxpayer-funded global platform.
Bannon associate Michael Pack now leads the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which oversees VOA and the Office of Cuba Broadcasting. It also funds these entities through grants: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Free Asia, and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks.

"When I am in high school, I am excited about black history month and talking about black inventors. One of my friends snorts and says, ‘Black people have never invented anything.’”

I grew up in Reno, Nevada.

In third grade a boy confidently tells me and my brother that his mom said black people cannot swim because our muscles are different than those of white people.
In middle school, standing among a group of white classmates talking video games, I am the only black child. One classmate expresses surprise that my family has enough money to afford a PlayStation.

So let’s talk about the cross as a blessing.

Jesus’ death on the cross relieves us from our false belief that life is a simple matter of cause-and-effect. ie. if we do the right thing, we get rewarded. Don’t we wish it were that simple! But beloveds it doesn’t work like that. 1/
If it did, Jesus would’ve died wealthy and of old age. But he was poor and quasi-homeless and he was not exactly on great terms with the powers that be. He didn’t make the 30 under 30 list, beloveds.

We can do all the “right things” and not “succeed” in the eyes of the world. 2/
The cross is a blessing bc it allows us to let go of this way of seeing the world, which frankly causes us to suffer because a lot of us work hard and do good and have little to show for it. It allows us to see life as a journey toward wisdom, not prosperity or accolades, etc. 3/

So to add some #scicomm to all your timelines, I’m going to talk about volcanoes on Mars! I’ll discuss general volcanism, how it is similar to volcanoes here on Earth, and specifics on the inactive (but possibly active!) volcanoes on the red planet! 🌋 (1/16) Image
So, what are volcanoes? Volcanic activity occurs when the internal heat of a planet causes rock to become molten. The molten rock, or magma, consists of silicates, other minerals, and dissolved gas such as water vapor and CO2. (2/16)
The magma then ascends through the planet’s crust due to it being less dense compared to the surrounding rock. Once it has reached a similar density, it either forms a magma chamber or erupts onto the planet’s surface, becoming lava. (3/16) Image

Yates moves the consent agenda EXCEPT for the rules around petition initatives. It would re-state the rules but not change anything for current campagns, who were mis-informed.

He wants to take it up later.
This is per Tom Carr, city attorney. I asked him if passing an ordinance that states that current campaigns aren't following the rules (bc staff told them different rules) would leave their issues open to legal challenges.

Maybe, he said.
It depends on if someone files suit, he replied. But someone has already threatened: Steve Pomerance, Carr said in yesterday's scheduling meeting.

In light of people talking about the weaponization of SJW rhetoric by abusers, I just want to talk about something that I have been hashing through mentally for... a very long time, and a framework that helped me a lot, and maybe will help some of you.
Some of you know that I was in a ... not great mental space. For a while.

It persisted longer than my not-great-mental spaces typically persisted.
There were a lot of things that got wrapped into this one, things that I hadn’t addressed and untangled, and things that were brought on by outside forces.

Next: Sale of the Pleasant Street parking lot to developers of the Hill hotel. Presentation: www-static.bouldercolorado.gov/docs/Item_3H_P…
Fair market value of that parking lot is determined by averaging the city's appraisal and developer's appraisal.

City appraisal $2.88M
Developer appraisal $2.6M
So, FMV = $2.74M
City may repurchase at that price if construction doesn’t start in 18 months
Developer wants to break ground in the fall

So that’s it, @VP Pence? You’re just going to close your eyes, plug your ears, & pat yourself on the back for the public health catastrophe under your watch? This is as pathetic as it is reckless. whitehouse.gov/articles/vice-…
Coronavirus keeps spreading across the country. Hundreds of Americans are still dying every day. And Dr. Fauci confirmed to me last month that another wave of coronavirus is “inevitable.” @VP Pence shouldn’t be celebrating – he should be making a plan.
As head of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, @VP Pence should be getting ready for the alarming possibility of another coronavirus wave on top of a bad flu season. I warned the Vice President to prepare last month. cnn.com/2020/05/21/hea…
