NEW DELHI: Watch out private news channels! Doordarshan News — though not aired on a separate channel anymore — has captured audience in cable and satellites homes as well.
After a recent SWOT analysis and make-over with guidance from BBC, Doordarshan News now claims 93% viewership.
TAM ratings released at a press conference addressed by director general SY Qureshi here today reveals that DD1 is watched by 28,50,000 people between 8 and 9 PM (when news is aired) whereas Aaj Tak is watched by 95,000, Zee News has 63,000 viewers and Star News is tuned into by 24,000 people.
The survey was conducted between November 10 and 16. According to Mr Qureshi this should set to rest TRP claims made by all private channels who are obviously after advertisements.
“Technically we are not a news channel but a multi-programme one, so others declare themselves the best news channel. There is a conscious effort by competitors to downplay DD, he said.
DD’s performance has improved dramatically after a SWOT analysis conducted earlier this year revealed it would be better to wind up the news channel and include the bulletin in the national channel.
Since then, revamp efforts are on : news round the clock every hour, increase in duration of some bulletins, regional news units have been set up, new anchors and reports appointed, new montage, news set, live inputs as well as in-house current affairs programmes.
In fact a DD survey of news viewers has also revealed that people prefer the non-sensational, straight news reportage of the public service broadcaster rather than endless discussions and analysis offered by private ones.
Another feather in DD’s cap is that apart from news, 35 out of 50 top programmes are aired on DD. For instance Aap Beeti commands a viewership of over 13m, while CID Officer has more than 10m.
Ankhe and Shakti also boast of over 9m viewers. In comparison, popular serials on cable/satellite TV like Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi, Kasauti Zindagi Kay, Des Main Nikla Hoga Chand and so on have 4-7m viewers each only.
Judging by this trend, Mr Qureshi is confident that the dip in DD revenue earnings — Rs 266.64 crore till November-end ’02 — as compared to Rs 327.9 crore during the same period last year (attributed to the withdrawal of Channel Nine) will be recovered.
