STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Readers rejoice!

The New York Public Library (NYPL), Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) and Queens Public Library (QPL) will reopen 22 branches throughout the five boroughs, including two on Staten Island, for grab-and-go service on Monday, July 13.

“We know how important it is to reopen our physical locations,” said Anthony W. Marx, president of The New York Public Library. “We know that our communities need us more than ever as they cope with multiple crises impacting public health, the economy, and social justice. People are hurting. People need help. People need us.”

The city’s libraries, which have been closed since mid-March due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, will reopen in phases to ensure a safe transition back for employees and visitors.

“We have a plan to reopen thoughtfully and carefully, with the safety of our staff and patrons as our first priority. This first group of branches is only the first step in that plan, but an important one. We hope to safely open more locations soon,” Marx said.

During the first phase of the libraries reopening, visitors will be able to access a small area of the library to pick up and return checkouts placed online or over the phone via contactless transactions. Once a transaction is complete, visitors must immediately exit, with no browsing permitted during phase one. All visitors must wear a mask, maintain safe social distance and respect posted capacity limits.

Fines have been temporarily suspended for all items checked out before the temporary closure or during phase one of the reopening.
