Novo-Goreloye Cemetery - Buchanan District, Saskatchewan
The following is an overview of the Novo-Goreloye Doukhobor Cemetery located 3 1/2 miles north-west of Buchanan, Saskatchewan. Rural Municipality of Buchanan No. 304. Historical Background
Novo-Goreloye Cemetery was established in 1899 by the Doukhobors of Novo-Goreloye village near Buchanan. After the abandonment of the village in 1910, the cemetery ceased to be actively used. Over the years, it has gradually been brought under cultivation and now only a portion of the cemetery remains intact. The cemetery is privately owned.
Layout
The cemetery is approximately half an acre in size and is unenclosed. The cemetery contains approximately 25 interments in one or more rows facing east-west. The graves are unmarked, save for a large concrete pad covering several graves. Today, all that remains is a grassy bluff in the middle of a cultivated field.
Driving Directions
To access the cemetery, travel west from Buchanan on Highway No. 5 for 2 miles
(3.2 km). Then turn north and continue on the gravel road for 1 1/2 miles (2.4
km). The cemetery is on the west side of the road, approximately 150 yards (137
m) from the road allowance. This cemetery is on private property and permission
to access should be obtained by the owners.
Burials
There is no burial register, cemetery plot map, death certificates, grave
markers or other records for Novo-Goreloye Cemetery. According to tradition, the following people are
known to have been buried there:
In addition, the following families resided in Novo-Goreloye village and may have
members buried in Novo-Goreloye Cemetery: Barowsky, Fofanoff, Holoboff, Kalmakoff,
Negraeff, Ostoforoff, Smorodin, Sukorukoff, Tomilin.
