SHIRLEY RUTH (IZZARD) HUBEL

HUBEL, Shirley Ruth (Izzard) Of Newton (Waban), and later of Lincoln, Feb. 17, 2013. Since 1953, the devoted and beloved wife of David H. Hubel (Nobel Prize in Medicine, 1981). Ruth is also survived of three sons, Carl, Eric and Paul, her brother Grant Izzard of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, two grandsons, two granddaughters and many nieces and nephews, all who dearly loved her. She was pre-deceased by her two sisters Barbara ('Babs') Izzard and Wilma Glenn. Ruth was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on July 20, 1929 to Ernest Walter Rae Izzard and Kathleen (Stinson) Izzard. She graduated from McGill University in 1951. Ruth was an avid potter and artisan, and was a long-time member of the Wellesley Arts and Crafts Guild, the Windsor Club (Waban) and Longwood tennis groups, and the Bear Knoll Ski group. After raising her children she earned a Master's degree from Boston University in Elementary Education and worked for several years as a remedial reading teacher at the Emerson School in Newton, MA, followed by 10 years working in the computer industry and many years creating and teaching pottery. Ruth contributed to many volunteer activities at church, local charities and schools. She was a passionate reader and music lover (alto recorder, piano, and singing). A memorial reception will be held at the Unitarian Church of Wellesley Hills, 309 Washington St., on Saturday, February 23 at 2:00 PM. Interment at a later date, on Mt. Royal Cemetery, Outremont / Montreal, Quebec. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in the name of S.
