Satyaram Reang

Born in 1943 in Tripura, Shri Satyaram Reang imbibed the music and dance traditions of the Reang tribe at an early age. Shri Reang has been per- forming in traditional festivals of his community since his child- hood. He is considered to be one of the most accomplished performers of the Hojagiri dance and of Kokborok songs. A large number of young people of his tribe have been trained by him. Together with a number of proficient musicians and dancers, he has founded a Lokaranjan Shakha. Shri Satyaram’s dedicated work in preserving and promot- ing the traditional Hojagiri dance of the Reangs has been recognized by the people of the region, and by various institutions in north-eastern India. Together with members of his troupe, he has travelled widely within the country. He has also performed in Russia and other countries. Shri Satyaram Reang receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribu- tion to the folk dance and music of Tripura.
