COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Voices of Resistance is a study of key voices in Europe leading to changes in the politics and culture of modern Europe. Among the writers we will study are Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a young German theologian who offered one of the first clear voices of resistance to Hitler in Germany during the 1930’s -1940’s, Vaclav Havel, author of The Power of the Powerless, an essay that led to the Velvet Revolution and resistance against the Soviet Union throughout Eastern Europe from the l960’s-1990’s and culminated in his being elected President of Czechoslovakia, Elie Wiesel, author of Night and a voice of resistance that led to a global awareness of the Holocaust , and Timothy Garton Ash writing about the peace movement in Eastern Europe, and especially the story of St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig, East Germany where the movement from the 1970’s-1980’s was born. We will spend time in Salzburg, Prague, Berlin, and a day trip from Berlin to Leipzig (and St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig). We will also make a day trip to Munich where we will visit the Dachau Concentration Camp (Martin Niemoller).

The first week (in Salzburg), classes meet every morning until lunch, Monday through Thursday. Each afternoon students are encouraged to explore Salzburg and join together for dinner each evening. From the afternoon of Thursday until classes begin Monday morning, students are encouraged to travel throughout Europe using their Eurail Pass. Students often visit Venice, Florence, Assisi, Vienna, Budapest, or Innsbruck. Longer trips include Amsterdam or Paris. The second week the class will go to Prague early on Monday morning through Thursday morning and then to Berlin for the rest of the week. Returning to Salzburg late Sunday evening and spending the third week in Salzburg, with a day trip to Munich (and Dachau) on Wednesday. The third weekend is free for travel to more cities. The fourth week is spent in Salzburg for the course conclusion.
