Blackpink And Selena Gomez Team Up For Ultra Sweet New Single ‘Ice Cream’

Hugh McIntyre

Almost exactly two months after they launched the first single from their forthcoming debut album, Blackpink is back with another tune titled “Ice Cream” that will surely become one more big hit for the most successful girl group in the world at the moment.

The single sees them teaming up with pop singer Selena Gomez, who lends her talents and her star power to the track, instantly bringing the project to a new level.

“Ice Cream” feels like if it had been released in May it could have been a real fighter for the Song of the Summer crown. The tune is infectious and so sweet it could give the listener a cavity...but then, that’s the point (of the song and ice cream in general).

Blackpink stick with trap-pop for their latest launch, but their latest release leans far more heavily into pop territory than trap, which sets it up for non-stop play at top 40 radio.

Lyrically, “Ice Cream” bounces between fun double entendres, upbeat nonsense (“Brr, brr, frozen, you're the one been chosen / Play the part like Moses, keep it fresh like roses”) and too many dessert metaphors, which is surprising considering Gomez has a songwriting credit alongside powerhouses like TEDDY, Victoria Monet and fellow pop supertstar Ariana Grande.

Anyone who follows pop music knows it’s not about word choices, as long as it all works. Thankfully, with Blackpink’s new single, it does.

Gomez’s inclusion on “Ice Cream” may help the catchy tune not only become a hit on the Billboard rankings next week, but perhaps Blackpink’s highest-charting track yet. Both acts are stars in their own right, and when their fan bases work together to buy and stream the cut at the same time, there’s no telling how far up the Hot 100 the single might climb.

“Ice Cream” is the latest release from Blackpink of 2020, and this year is turning out to be the biggest yet for the quartet. The vocal outfit joined Lady Gaga on her Chromatica promotional single “Sour Candy,” which dropped just one day before the pop star’s latest album. The tune wasted no time rising into the top 40 on the Hot 100, becoming their first placement inside the region and her latest win.

Just a few weeks after “Sour Candy” came and went, Blackpink returned with their own solo offering “How You Like That.” The electro-trap banger serves as the first taste of their debut album Blackpink: The Album, which is coming in early October. That cut also rose into the top 40 on the Hot 100, matching the No. 33 peak of their Gaga collaboration.
