At the time I assumed the grown men and women telling her how amazing she is are just being polite, or are maybe wrapped up in the moment. But we saw her around in the next few days, and talked about her privately, and everyone continued insisting that she's amazing. 13/17

These *same* people are the ones who would die on the hill of keeping creationism out of public schools, having the government set common core, and opposing school choice at all costs because it would hurt minority children for some vague reason. 14/17

So a father giving a child who probably can't read or write LSD was a beautiful search for truth, while parents who want to give their kids christian education are obviously bible stumping nutjobs. 15/17

It's really late and I'm running out of steam, so I'll leave you with this. We are not a free country for as long as parents don't have the right (and ability) to pick a school for their kids. It's nearly enough to make me a single issue voter. 16/17

(I haven't thought about the acid girl for years. I wonder how she's doing now, and if her art got any better.) 17/17

No, we were all just kids. But given how politicized everything is today, it’s not a stretch to imagine that mature people wouldn’t have been able to agree even on an incident as clear cut as this.

i see the hypocrisy you're pointing out, but as a parent i find the situation anything but clear cut. legally it's child abuse, but arguably the child is worse off as a ward of the state. i can see how vulnerable children surrounded by criminality are; nobody reports

The absolute saddest problem in the US is that unless there is serious violence or sexual abuse (and often even then), the state simply can’t make it better, and often makes it worse. It’s just the way things are, there doesn’t seem to be a solution, and it’s very very sad.

I think the reason people don’t report is that they weigh these things and, like you, decide the child wouldn’t be better off in state’s care. It isn’t out of indifference (or at least for me it isn’t).
