Introduction to The Universal Sherlock Holmes
Volume 1 of The Universal Sherlock Holmes
Volume 2 of The Universal Sherlock Holmes
Volume 3 of The Universal Sherlock Holmes
Volume 4 of The Universal Sherlock Holmes

As can be seen, an incredible and alarming number of parodies and pastiches have been published. It seems that almost everyone is trying his/her hand at imitating, or mocking, Watson's style of writing. Of course, some writers are more successful than others. There are the serious imitations (pastiches) written by such notable authors as Vincent Starrett and August Derleth, the humorous imitations by authors like John Kendrick Bangs and Robert L. Fish, and then the scandalous pornographic imitations, some by anonymous authors (and anonymous they should be). Without a doubt, Doyle and Holmes and Watson would have been amazed by the pastiches, amused by the parodies, but disgusted by the pornography.

There are novels in which Canonical characters other than Holmes and Watson are the main characters; e.g., John Gardner's novels about Professor Moriarty, M. J. Trow's novels about Inspector Lestrade, and Carole Nelson Douglas's novels about Irene Adler. There are also novels in which Holmes and Watson or other Canonical characters are not the central characters but are featured as minor characters. Still other and countless novels only mention the detective's name and therefore are not included in this bibliography. Some stories are based on one of the untold tales from Dr. Watson's tin dispatch-box.

In the beginning I could not have anticipated just how many parodies and especially pastiches would eventually be written about Sherlock Holmes. Otherwise I might have arranged them differently and even attempted to classify the stories by type (perhaps only Jon L. Lellenberg could do this). For instance, I made separate sections for the stories by August Derleth and Robert L. Fish because of the numerous stories by these authors and because of all the writings about the stories. It seemed logical at the time. However, when Luther Norris died so did The Solar Pons Society and the literature that it generated. Ted Schulz tried to revive the society but, unfortunately, without much success, perhaps because of the increasing number of articles and books about Holmes and Watson -- and Conan Doyle. There simply may not be room enough in the Sherlockian world for both Holmes and Pons. I also had a separate section for the pastiches by Adrian Conan Doyle and John Dickson Carr, when the stories might just as easily have been listed with the other stories.

Sherlockians are unanimous in agreeing that none of these authors has been as successful as Conan Doyle, or should I say, Dr. Watson. That was the genius of Doyle.

U.N.C.L.E. chief Alexander Waverly, one of the original Baker Street Irregulars, was especially trained for his duties by Holmes, who, on one occasion, worked with U.N.C.L.E.

"Sherlock Holmes is a legendary figure of fiction, so powerful a legend that we take him as almost real.... I think the imaginative arts may be trying to demonstrate, impudently but emphatically, that in its own way fiction can be quite as true as fact."

Contents: 1. Never accept a shortened version of the original! -- 2. Ignore the commercial Holmes pastiches! -- 3. Meet Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson on their conditions!

The author longs for a more puristic Sherlockian attitude. Beginners should start with the original stories. Shortened versions and bad commercial pastiches are of little use to them and, above all, ought to be neglected by true Sherlockians. We love Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Let's cut out the "Sherlock" attitude!

C21336. Merrill, Edward A. "Tinged with Romanticism? ... or Tampering with the Facts?" BSM, No. 18 (June 1979), 15-21.

An examination of eleven pastiches, published from 1974 to 1978, purportedly based on "manuscripts" by Watson, Holmes, or Moriarty. By comparison of their contradictory reporting of Canonical events and protagonists, it is demonstrated that they have no consistency which might give credence to these forgeries as primary source materials. Whatever their merits as fiction, they contribute nothing to the Higher Criticism, to use them as references is deplorable, and to represent them as Canonical is inconceivable.

Holmes is to Watson what Pons is to Parker, as it must be in a Miller analogy. Regardless of the analogy, we know very little about these two sleuths' famous companions and biographers. But here we get a glimpse of Dr. Parker not revealed in the Pontine Canon. A look is taken at the man without whom there would be none of the chronicled events that make Solar Pons so vital to our lives. One step back in history to World War I takes us to a time before the two men met in a pub not far from Paddington Station -- the time when the good doctor wore the uniform of his King and country.
