Editors’ Notes Sam Smith was on the cusp of releasing their third album, To Die For, when the global pandemic hit, forcing the singer to rethink. “The title of my album and imminent release doesn't feel right,” they wrote on social media back in March. “I have to come to the decision to continue working on the album and make some important changes and additions.” Early teasers of the revised record—now named Love Goes—arrive in the form of “My Oasis,” a laidback yet impassioned rumination on love featuring Burna Boy, and the soaring “Diamonds.” 2020’s triumphant single with Demi Lovato, “I’m Ready,” is also present, as are “Dancing With a Stranger” (Smith’s Normani-featuring sad banger), “How Do You Sleep?” and the aching no-longer-title-track “To Die For.”

But while Smith may have embraced a new name for their long-awaited release, the singer’s ethos since the release of 2017’s The Thrill of It All remains unchanged. These are still the songs about love, loss, and heartache that have become Smith’s signature, but these days, they're determined to let loose—and invite us all to dance it out. “I want people to smile and feel confident in their sadness,” Smith told Apple Music in early 2020. “The last year or so has been a real [time] of self-realization and coming to terms with a lot.
