Zoom into the Pillars of Creation

This awe-inspiring video from Hubble images shows the view from the Milky Way, then zooms deeper into the starfield to the Eagle Nebula & its "Pillars of Creation" which are vast columns of interstellar gas & dust.

The weird thing is that these features are so large (several light years across) and not actually that colorful, so they would be indistinguishable if a person were actually in their vicinity.

The scale of the area shown in this video is just impossible for the human mind to truly grasp. It is humbling, terrifying, and beautiful all at the same time.

Eye of a Walking Stick - Macro Closeup

Have you ever looked deeply into the eye of a walking stick bug?

As I used my macro lens to zoom into the barely visible head of the insect, I realized there was a discernible eye on the side of it's antennae.

From this close, it really looks like a strange alien head of some sort, proving that we don't need to look to other planets to find interesting life forms.

Here is the walking stick a bit more zoomed out:

1st Trump & Biden Presidential Debate of 2020

"Will you shut up, man?"

Ugh, what an absolute shit-show

I've sat through some bad & really bad Presidential debates in my time, but this one doesn't even deserve the term "Presidential". I expected it to be really bad... and my expectations were still way too high! Just all-around fucking awful.

I'm not even going to show the video, because I don't want to be responsible for subjecting people to such a cultural travesty.

My wife & I watched the whole thing, pretty much disgusted & horrified that this is the state of American political discourse. She asked me if we were in the Twilight Zone, & I couldn't confidently answer in the negative.

Trump was what he always is - a complete moron, & an utter, insufferable, obnoxious A$$HOLE. The knuckleheads who already love him will think he dominated Biden with all the idiotic ranting and interruption, but to any reasonable person he comes off as a complete mental patient & a total jackass.

Biden was basically steamrolled by Trump's nonstop spew of bullshit & lies. He wasn't nearly as aggressive as he needed to be when faced with a shameless, unhinged narcissist. Biden landed a few frustrated jabs, and unfortunately the only effective counter was getting low with the name-calling and mockery - calling Trump a "clown","a fool", and "Putin's poodle". Trying to hold a rational debate with a deranged, compulsive liar is an almost impossible task.

This quote came to mind:

“Never play chess with a pigeon. The pigeon just knocks all the pieces over, shits all over the board, then struts around like it won.”.

I think Biden's best moments were when he directly appealed to us, the American people, & our families. Trump only spoke in terms of how good HE was doing at everything, as usual.  However, Biden just looked completely befuddled a lot of the time & stumbled over his words, as Trump just gish-galloped his way over the other people on the stage.

Which brings me to the 3rd person on the stage, moderator Chris Wallace. For a Fox News employee, Wallace is fairly objective. Unfortunately, he was horrible at moderating this debate and had little control over the Trump Bullshit Train.

The one thing I've seen many people commenting & agreeing on is that (especially with someone like Trump) there needs to be moderator control over cutting the sound to the individual mics. When one person's time is up, CUT THE GODDAMN MIC. That's it. That would vastly improve these horrific displays, with people talking over each other and spending half the debate about respecting the rules & exhibiting self-control, something that The President of the United Fucking States seemingly can't comprehend.

Ok, I'm done. I've already wasted enough time talking about this nonsense. The fact that 30% of this country see the way Trump acts and thinks he's fit in any way to run anything, proves that our country is full of idiots. We have two 70+ year old white guys haplessly arguing on a stage about the most important issues facing our country, and there's barely any substantive information presented at all. It shows why our country is such a dumpster fire right now & why I don't even bother posting about politics much anymore. I hope other people are also fed up enough to stop this madness and work toward government that is functional again, for the well-being of this country and the people in it.

Longwood Gardens 9-13-20

Recently my entire family went to Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. My parents bought us all tickets last Christmas, and we were finally able to all get together to go. It was the first visit for my baby son Paul Giuseppe, so it was extra special for us.

I have been there several times, and it never gets old. There are so many wonderful things to see and experience. The natural beauty and artistry of the grounds inspires a deep appreciation of plant & animal life.

I uploaded an album of photos, with some of my favorites shared below:

I used my macro camera lens to get an extreme closeup of this beetle's head.

The iridescent green & texture on its exoskeleton was awesome.

Neuralink Unveiling

Recently, tech entrepreneur, visionary, & hype-man Elon Musk publicly introduced the Neuralink technology - a brain-computer interface that will allow the mind to directly connect to machines.

Right now, the most promising aspect is the potential to help control artificial limbs or give paralyzed individuals a way to access electronic devices. However, Musk envisions direct mind-to-mind communication, or be jacked-in to a digital space in which the possibilities for cognitive enhancement are truly limitless.

The smartphone & portable digital devices have revolutionized our personal and social experiences, just as the development of computers did before them. This is clearly the next step in human technological evolution, whether everyone is ready for it or not.

As with any new tool or system, there are unforeseen positive and negative consequences that will arise as a result. In many ways it will advance human consciousness beyond anything we can imagine. We currently have the entire catalog of human knowledge at our fingertips, but perhaps we will be able to access it on multiple streams at the speed of thought. On the flip side, this kind of human augmentation will likely segment society in even more extreme ways than social media and other digital tech is doing today.

This article from Wired presented some good insight into what Neuralink offers now, what is possible in the future, and what difficult issues researchers face in advancing the technology.

WIRED:

Neuralink Is Impressive Tech, Wrapped in Musk Hype

The largest hurdle in fully realizing the potential of this technology is our limited understanding of the brain/mind itself. I am currently reading "The Fractal Brain Theory" by Wai Tsang and it is a technically immersive look into the complexities of the brain's architecture at various scales, and how they intermesh together.

I think the progression of this technology to completely integrated neural circuitry is inevitable. Although it has not fulfilled my vision of an "Apple iThink" implant that I presented over 10 years ago, the road is clearly being paved in that direction.

Coral-like Puffball Mushroom

I saw this interesting puffball fungus in my lawn. It had a nice texture that resembled coral, & was about the size of a baseball.

After some research, I think it is Calvatia cyathiformis.

Mating Moths

This summer I've taken a lot of nature photos & video, so that will probably be much of my upcoming posting here.

I'm fortunate to have all kinds of plant and animal life on my property, so there's always new things to photograph.

In my yard, I spotted these moths that were mating in the grass. I was able to get close enough without disturbing them to get some quality footage of bug porn.

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker - Force Ghost Edit

As a life-long Star Wars fan, I've posted plenty about my favorite series on this blog. I've also had my share of criticism, especially for the finale of the Skywalker movie saga

Review:

"Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker"

My biggest of the many criticisms, that you can read at the link above, is the omission of Anakin Skywalker from the sequel trilogy.

A fan name Josh edited an excellent sequence together from the final battle between Rey & her grandpappy Palpatine. It shows what was egregiously missing from the actual movie - the spirits of the Jedi aiding Rey in defeating the Sith Lord once & for all.

STAR WARS Rise of Skywalker- Rey Vs Palpatine (Force Ghost Edit)

My only grievance with this edit is that a legion of past Jedi weren't all shown behind Rey. I think a similar inclusion of a crowd of Jedi spirits should also have happened on Tatooine at the very end, when Luke & Leia's ghosts appear to her. They should at least have included Anakin, but no... who gives a damn about the character that the entire story was based on? Grrrrr....

This relatively simple edit by a fan shows how easily the shitshow of The Rise of Skywalker could have been made into something truly epic.

As I said in my review, & I'll repeat here, Kathleen Kennedy, JJ Abrahms, Rian Johnson, the Star Wars story group, & everyone involved in the production of these movies basically fucked it up. My optimism regarding Disney's acquisition of the franchise was definitely misplaced.

If only they had hired someone like me - with just a bit of creative vision, who actually gives a crap about the integrity of the property. Although I will watch the movies with my son & still enjoy them, I think I will be bitter about the way it was handled for the rest of my life.

Green Praying Mantis Macro

There has been a green praying mantis hanging out on the rose bush on our deck, eating any invasive insects that might have come its way.

I took some photos using a macro lens, and also some video. I saw it eating a small fly, but by the time I grabbed my lens and ran back outside, the fly was already devoured & the mantis was cleaning off it's front grabbing legs.

You can see it's tiny black pupil looking back at me.

Massive Ant Swarm

In my backyard, I noticed this massive swarm creating a superhighway of ants through the grass.

As I zoomed in, there was a writhing mass of thousands of ants crawling over each other.

Trump Interviewing Trump

After sitting through the entire interview for Axios that Jonathan Swan had with Donald Trump, I was just overwhelmed as usual by the sheer stupidity & derangement that The President of the United States exudes.

My wife asked me several times during the interview, "Is this fucking real?" I agreed, it felt like a bad fever dream in which nothing made sense, which left only a feeling of existential dread in any rational person.

I think the camera work and video editing did a lot to give a sense of realness to Trump's presence... which naturally results in being completely surreal.

Also, Mr. Swan's ability to conduct basic journalism by following up as much as possible, & calling out Trump's inevitable torrent of bullshit, highlighted the utter foolishness of the man in one of the most important positions on Earth.

A genius named Justin T. Brown took this footage and created something truly spectacular - Trump interviewing himself, to make the impossibly crazy even crazier

Here is the original Axios interview below. There are so many horrifyingly amazing lines throughout this interview. My brother & I had a text conversation using nothing but Trump quotes from this interview. It's absolute absurdity, and people still think this buffoon who has turned everything he touches to shit is qualified to be in any position of public leadership:

Trunk Monkeys

I'm continuing the "Primates Gone Rogue" theme from previous posts:

Knife & Chainsaw-Carrying Baboons on a Rampage

Monkey Gangsta

Now we have "Trunk Monkey," a truly inspired ad campaign by Suburban Auto Group.

In this commercial, a Trunk Monkey is unleashed on a bunch of unruly kids throwing eggs at a car. At first, I thought it was implied that the monkey ate the kid or ripped his kid's face off, but the end shows that he just made all the kids wash the car.
Another one combines my favorites - monkeys & aliens. Even advanced extraterrestrial technology is no match for brute chimp strength:

Knife & Chainsaw-Carrying Baboons on a Rampage

One of my former teachers who reads this blog sent me this story.

It seems like humans are not the only species sowing chaos right now!...

Yahoo News:

Of course, though, it is the humans who are the assholes, not the animals:
"But now, some staff are concerned that the baboons are being given weapons “for a laugh” by park-goers, according to the Sunday Times."

The primates are breaking into people's belongings, as they tend to do, and one reportedly got a hold of a chainsaw. I'm sure the baboon didn't rev it up & start chasing people, but it makes for a crazy headline.

Strange Leaf Growths

I was walking along the woods in my backyard and saw one leaf covered in these weird protrusions:

I don't know if it was some kind of fungus, parasitic plant, or tiny alien pods?

Here is a look at the rest of the leaves, showing they were unaffected.

Remember This Guy??

This COMPLETELY EXPOSES the Bidin/Pelosi/COVID-19 connection!!!!

🦠🇺🇸☠️🤯

In all seriousness, the propagation of misinformation and outright lies that are online is one of the most difficult issues we are facing as an entire human species. The Internet, the greatest information tool ever created, is simply that... a tool. There are inevitably "bad" uses,  as there are "good" or "neutral" uses.

How we address the negative consequences of digital information and social media is one of the major questions of our time. Disinformation & malevolent propaganda are the source of many of the global, national, and local problems in modern society.

Little Green Bugs

In the summer I love being outside & spending time in nature. My backyard has an wide array of wildlife and insects. I'm always on the lookout for things that are interesting, but might be too small to see normally.

Here's a couple I got photos of recently.

by Paul Micarelli

This tiny green insect was crawling through my leg hair, like it was an impenetrable forest. I didn't have my macro lens on me, so I got as close as I could with my iPhone camera.

My finger for scale:

I also saw this small green praying mantis hanging on one of our outdoor flower pots. Hopefully he goes after the beetles that are munching on our roses.

Medical Animation Gone Beserk

All these years,  I've been brushing my teeth all wrong....

adult swim

The video is like a medical computer animator decided to take massive amounts of psychedelics and just go nuts. Technically, the computer graphics are top-notch - which makes the surreal presentation so much more enjoyable.

Pure genius, in my opinion.

I love the reference at the end to the video "The Inner Life of the Cell", which I posted here before.

Fractal Water Droplets

Continuing my experimentation with macro photography of water droplets, here is another photo from a household item instead of nature.

by Paul Micarelli

This is a closeup of the drops of condensation on the clear lid of one of our kitchen pots. It forms a fractal pattern that has at least 6 distinct levels of scale.

It almost becomes abstract without the context of the surface it was on.

Paul Giuseppe Micarelli - Born 6-13-20!

Let me tell you the story of the eventful birth of my son Paul Giuseppe Micarelli, the survivor- who has already lived through so much with me & Loretta, his warrior mother...

In the midst of the craziest time in modern history - with pandemics, riots, and social upheaval - Paul was born into even MORE crazy circumstances.

We planned to have a natural water birth in our home, with the assistance of a midwife. Things did NOT go according to plan, to say the least!

Loretta's water broke around 12 midnight on Fri. 6/13/20 after having a few days of contractions, so we called the midwife. We were as prepared as we were going to be, and after the midwife arrived were waiting through the early contractions.

The midwife decided to do a check around 3AM, & I walked out of the room to give the women privacy. After a minute or 2, I was called back in to horrible scene that I will never forget. My wife was on her hands & knees crying, and the midwife looked panicked. The midwife told me she had already called 911...

The umbilical cord was in front of the baby's head. If he continued to come out, there was a chance he would have the cord's circulation cut off. I woke her mom Donna up on the couch & told her to get up. We went back in the room trying to comfort Loretta, but were both absolutely terrified.
We had cops & medics at the house within minutes. Loretta went in an ambulance to Jefferson Hospital, still on her hands & knees with the midwifes hand inside her the whole time, who was holding the baby's head up to prevent his oxygen from being cut off. Loretta had to get an emergency C-section, due to a prolapsed cord. Her mom came with me & we followed the racing ambulance, full of worry and fear for Loretta and the baby.

We were all very scared & upset that this happened. We were rushed into the ER, and met with the medical team who insisted on putting Loretta under for the surgery. Loretta (still in the same uncomfortable position & midwife holding the baby's emerging head!) pleaded for a risky spinal, even though she couldn't sit up, so she could be awake for the birth & because she was afraid to go under anesthesia. She had a very bad feeling about losing consciousness at that time.
The team walked out of the room to discuss, & then reluctantly agreed to give her the shot while on her side- with the stipulation that they would only try the spinal once & then they would have to go with the original plan.

Loretta was taken away for the longest few minutes of my life while the shot was given... & it worked! I was rushed into the operating room, where Loretta was already being prepped for surgery.
The procedure only lasted 5-10 minutes, and I tried to comfort Loretta as much as I could, although I was scared out of my damn mind... When we finally heard the baby's cry, we both let the tears flow out of pure joy & relief.

The surgery was a success! Paul Giuseppe Micarelli was born at 5:25am on June 13, 2020 weighing 6lb 13oz.

Everyone is fine now! Paulie is such a good baby. We’ve been holding him & loving him like there's nothing else in this world, grateful he's still alive. He’s so peaceful, both when sleeping and awake.
Loretta is recovering from the C-section & is already walking around after 1 day.

This has been the wildest emotional roller coaster of my life, & as I write this I've cried once again- out of remembering the pure terror of the beginning & then the indescribable joy of his successful birth. It's all still very overwhelming.

We are so grateful for everyone's love and support through such an important time in our lives. We look forward to you everyone meeting this amazing (& cute) little guy!

Here's an album of photos from our time in the hospital after his birth:

P.S. I was really excited that the day he was born, "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" was playing in the hospital room! My wife turned on the TV just as Luke was training with Master Yoda. We will be watching these movies together for many years to come!

Cosmic Droplet

"Cosmic Droplet" by Paul Micarelli

I took a macro photo of a tiny dew drop on a clover leaf.

When my wife saw it, she said the reflection inside the droplet looked like Earth from outer space.

by Paul Micarelli

So, I decided to create the video above, zooming out from what appears to be the macrocosm, but is actually the microcosm.

COVID Monkey Thieves

Just when we thought things couldn't get any worse....

 The Guardian

"Monkeys mobbed an Indian health worker and made off with blood samples from coronavirus tests, prompting fears they could have spread the virus in the local area."

I have nothing else to add. Everything is just off-the-rails-crazy at this point.

Trump Bible™

Our wise & righteous Leader has inspired me once again!!!

President Trump's triumphant walk through the area in Washington DC, where masses of protesting American citizens were dispersed by tear gas, was truly a sight to behold.

As our glorious President waddled up to the front of the church and held the Bible awkwardly aloft, there was no doubt that this was a very special, totally-not-cynically-pandering photo-op. This is one of the many great moments in Trump's United Empire of America™ that will go down in history.

In honor of America FINALLY being "Great Again", I am presenting this special offer to all MAGA acolytes & true believers:

TRUMP BIBLE™

Seriously though, what the hell is this shit?!?!?! He's so ridiculous & stupid...
