Androniki (Nina) Drakou, born in 1965, is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, specializing in Limb Reconstruction of complex skeletal defects.She masters the Ilizarov method for Limb lengthening and cutting-edge Distraction Osteogenesis applications.

 

She holds an MBBS (1991) from the Medical School, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, a Masters of Philosophy (MPhil, 2008) from The University of Sheffield, UK, and a BTEC Postgraduate Diploma in Principles of Computer-Assisted Knee Arthroplasty (PCAKA, 2011), from the University of Glasgow, UK.

 

 

In Greece, she is the first and primary user of the last generation lengthening nails and part of the beta-surgeons world team testing the first bone transport nail.She has organized national congress and seminars involving Limb reconstruction principles and techniques in Greece, and she is a constant lab demonstrator at the annual Baltimore Limb Deformity Course (Maryland, USA).

 

She is a Member of the College of the Greek Orthopaedic Surgeons, of the European Bone and Joint Infection Society, associate Member of the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society of North America as well as of the British Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society.

 

Her research involves using Antibiotic Carriers in the Treatment of Osteomyelitis and the Role of Oxidative Stress on Bone Remodeling Phenomena.

At present, she is the Clinical & Scientific Director of the Orthopaedic and Reconstruction Department at the "Laiko" General Hospital, Medical School of Athens, and The Director of the only Reference Center for Rare Bone Diseases of Greece awaiting for its national recognition.Her main interests lie in the field of Limb Reconstruction by Distraction Osteogenesis, Complex Trauma, Bone Infection, Rare Skeletal Diseases as well as Computer Assisted and Minimal Invasive Arthroplasty of the Hip & Knee.

She has received honors, awards, and grants for her work and continuous research and has published in peer-reviewed journals.

 

Dr. Drakou has also been seriously involved in humanitarian missions worldwide under the hospice of Humanitarian Charity MiST and runs a conjoined program with MSF- Greece, named "For the Rehabilitation and Treatment of Victims of Torture."

 

She holds a Piano Diploma from the Thrace Conservatory (1982) and participated in Japanese Micro-sculpting Art Exhibitions in 2009 and 2010 in Athens, Greece, under sculptress Maria Ghini.
