Murphy is perhaps best known for his role as Tommy Shelby in the BAFTA award-winning BBC drama, Peaky Blinders, for which he won both Best Drama Performance at the 2020 National Television Awards and Best Actor at the Irish Film and Television awards in 2018.
Between 1996 and 1998 Murphy toured internationally with the theatre production of Enda Walsh’s’ Disco Pigs, before going on to win the Ourense Independent Film Festival Award for Best Actor in the 2002 film adaption. Over the course of his career he has appeared in films including Dunkirk, Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Breakfast On Pluto and 28 Days Later and continues to appear regularly on stage. In 2011 he was awarded the Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Actor, and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance for Enda Walsh’s Misterman and most recently could be seen in the lead role of Grief Is The Thing With Feathers during a sold-out run at The Barbican.
