Seyi Babatope is a graduate from California State University Northridge in Cinema and Television Arts in Screen Writing. The budding director has worked on television commercials, music videos, television dramas and situation comedies. When Love Happens marks his feature directorial debut.
Where did the inspiration from When Love Happens come from?
Inspiration gosh! That’s a good and weird question because you never know until it comes. I wanted to make a film practical enough. The idea came out of that and influences from my experiences and moments with friends and loved ones.
Did you already have certain actors in mind or were you blown away at the auditions?
I don’t really do auditions. I had a shortlist and I went through them and the actors earned their roles.
How long did it take from the first “action” to the last “cut”?
Two weeks of principal photography.
Did you get support from the private sector in form of brand placement?
This is a completely independently made film. No brand support of any kind. I tried but it was considered a hard sell. So we did it on our own. It’s kind of gratifying too. We feel a little taller lol!
What are your hopes for this film?
I hope people love the film and support it in the thousands and bigiilions. What am I supposed to say? And we all become rock stars…that will be nice by the way.
Why should people come out to watch this film?
It’s a sweet warm romantic film and should make even the most cynical person smile. And maybe chuckle!
Has love happened for you?
Love has happened to me oh. Yes plenty.
Who would you like to work with next?
I want to work with talented passionate people who understand what it’s all about. Nobody per say. I’m sure there is an actor I would meet some time tomorrow that will be a joy to work with.
What advice do you have for upcoming directors?
It’s a lonely journey. Part of the process is acquiring wisdom and this can come in many forms. Stay attentive. The whole career is a journey; it’s not always about now. I wish us all an amazing journey.
In one word, you are?
A CityZen of Manchester City Football Nation aka CHAMPS to those who don’t know.
