Atlassian Standard Infrastructure (ASI) on AWS

A highly available, secure VPC for hosting Atlassian Data Center products

This Quick Start sets up the Atlassian Standard Infrastructure (ASI)—a highly available, secure virtual private cloud (VPC) that is specifically customized to host Atlassian Data Center products such as Jira, Bitbucket Data Center, and Confluence Data Center on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud. The ASI contains all the components required for the deployment and integration of multiple Atlassian Data Center products within the same VPC.

The Quick Start sets up this foundational stack, which includes the VPC, managed NAT gateways, and a Linux bastion host, and then exports the stack’s output values to expose the foundational components to other stacks. The Quick Starts for Jira, Bitbucket Data Center, and Confluence Data Center use the exported values to discover these underlying components, so you can easily provision multiple Atlassian products on this infrastructure.

The Jira, Bitbucket Data Center, and Confluence Data Center Quick Starts require the ASI. You can deploy the ASI either by using this Quick Start, or by choosing the new ASI option when you deploy an Atlassian product.

  •  What you'll build
  • Use this Quick Start to build out the following AWS infrastructure components, which are required by all Atlassian Data Center products:

    • A highly available architecture that spans two Availability Zones.
    • A virtual private cloud (VPC) configured with public and private subnets according to AWS best practices, to provide you with your own virtual network on AWS.
    • In the public subnets, managed network address translation (NAT) gateways to allow outbound internet access for updates and packages.
    • In the public subnets, a Linux bastion host in an Auto Scaling group to allow inbound Secure Shell (SSH) access to Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances in the public and private subnets. This bastion host enables secure access to hosted Atlassian products without exposing them to the internet. (This deployment uses the Quick Start for Linux bastion hosts to provision this component.)
  •  How to deploy
  • To build the ASI on AWS, follow the instructions in the deployment guide. The deployment process includes these steps:

    1. If you don't already have an AWS account, sign up at https://aws.amazon.com.
    2. Launch the Quick Start. The deployment takes about 20 minutes.
    3. Deploy Jira, Bitbucket Data Center, and Confluence Data Center by using the option to deploy the product into an existing ASI.

    Important
If you are deploying and integrating multiple Atlassian applications, we recommend that you provision them all within the same ASI.

Amazon may share user-deployment information with the AWS Partner that collaborated with AWS on the Quick Start.

  •  Cost and licenses
  • You are responsible for the cost of the AWS services used while running this Quick Start reference deployment. There is no additional cost for using the Quick Start.

The AWS CloudFormation template for this Quick Start includes configuration parameters that you can customize. Some of these settings, such as instance type, will affect the cost of deployment. See the pricing pages for each AWS service you will be using for cost estimates. Prices are subject to change.

Tip   After you deploy the Quick Start, we recommend that you enable the AWS Cost and Usage Report to track costs associated with the Quick Start. This report delivers billing metrics to an S3 bucket in your account. It provides cost estimates based on usage throughout each month, and finalizes the data at the end of the month. For more information about the report, see the AWS documentation.

The ASI doesn't require a license. See the Quick Starts for Jira, Bitbucket Data Center, and Confluence Data Center for licensing requirements for those products.
