Trusted End Node Security

Last Update: 2020-08-31 23:54 UTC

Trusted End Node Security (TENS), previously called Lightweight Portable Security (LPS), is a Linux-based live CD with a goal of allowing users to work on a computer without the risk of exposing their credentials and private data to malware, key loggers and other Internet-era ills. It includes a minimal set of applications and utilities, such as the Firefox web browser or an encryption wizard for encrypting and decrypting personal files. The live CD is a product produced by the United States of America's Department of Defence and is part of that organization's Software Protection Initiative.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Just discovered TENS and this was exactly what I was looking for.

It was reasonably easy to set up and use ( burn the iso -> legacy boot from cd rom -> start DNSCrypt -> check openDNS and browse ).

Then turn off when done browsing.

This is a good common sense approach for a normal person to quickly browse the internet, get the job done, and get out.

Combined with other hardware measures to physically isolate operating systems to prevent cross-contamination ( like Qubes OS but done with physical hardware instead of software sandbox ) TENS completes my computing needs by filling the role for a quick internet access via a browser.

I spent several hours playing with this new version.

First off, try as I might I could never get the OS to boot from a usb drive. I tried both version and three ways to do it successfully. I did the restore partition in disk in mint. I did the DD command. And I used unetbootin. None of them worked. That was a total DUD...a gubment issued dud too.

The burn to a dvd did work and boot. Once inside I found the same tired interface and only a guest account. No root account, no way to lock the screen while the system is running. The OS will spoof the MAC address in network manager but you must first connect to the router or whatever. But that defeats the whole purpose of spoofing anyway. Still can't manually spoof the MAC address in the terminal either. I did try Tor but it will not run in a guest account apparently. This version is using 68.7.0esr version of Firefox. FF doesn't have noscripts or adblocker installed but is using privacy badger so I guess that is something though not how I would run it. No Https everywhere either.

Something odd though. While in the terminal I was able to do a 'shutdown -r now' and 'reboot -i' successfully on two different occasions.

In reflection I was generous with the 2 rating I gave. Oh, I did the plain jane version, not deluxe, on the DVD. i refuse to waste another good DVD on this gubment dud.

Burned to DVD -- loads quickly, works perfectly. No luck with integral USB creator, nor with workarounds suggested by the friendly and helpful support staff. Super security features and a bloody marvellous encryption tool comes with it. I like it.
