In commemoration of the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic, the International Astronomical Union, the world body of astronomers, has approved the name "Thomasandrews" for a newly discovered

Discovered 2004 Oct. 12 by Tom Glinos, David and Wendee Levy at Jarnac.
Named in honor of Thomas Andrews (1873-1912), the architect who was primarily responsible for the design of the RMS Titanic, the largest artificial moving object in the world when, on 15 April 1912, it sank in the North Atlantic Ocean after colliding with an iceberg while sailing from Southampton to New York. This asteroid is named to commemorate the sinking of this ship on its maiden voyage 100 years ago.
The asteroid was discovered on October 12, 2004 by astronomers Tom Glinos, Wendee Levy, and David Levy at the Jarnac Observatory, and the citation was prepared by David Levy (co-discoverer Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 that colliided with Jupiter in 1994).

Thomas Andrews was my great uncle, so my family has had a great deal of interest in the history of the Titanic. What a wonderful way to commemorate a very special man.
