Jimmie V. Reyna Receives Highest Recognition from the Government of Mexico

09.08.2009 Jimmie V. Reyna Receives Highest Recognition from the Government of Mexico WASHINGTON, D.C. – Williams Mullen is pleased to announce that Jimmie V. Reyna, a partner in the firm’s International Law Section and the chair of the firm’s Latin America Task Force, has received the 2009 Ohtli Award in Law from the Government of Mexico. The Ohtli Award is the highest recognition that the Mexican government bestows on non-Mexican citizens. The award recognizes Mr. Reyna for his contributions to Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, and Latinos in the United States.

“This is a tremendous honor for Jimmie,” said Julious P. Smith, Jr., chairman and CEO of Williams Mullen. “Throughout his life, Jimmie has dedicated his time and his legal expertise to benefiting the Latino community in the U.S. As president of the Hispanic National Bar Association he was a driving force behind numerous initiatives that have opened up new opportunities for Latinos for generations to come. He truly is deserving of this award and I am honored to have him as a partner.”

"Ohtli" is an indigenous Nahuatl word meaning the "path" or the "pathway." Indigenous manuscripts picture the Ohtli as footprints in sand or a pathway, indicating one who has gone before. It is awarded each year in various fields, such as the arts, sciences, education, civil society, medicine, and the law. In a formal letter of recognition, the Mexican Ambassador to the United States Arturo Sarukhan, congratulates Jimmie as a "distinguished attorney who has committed himself to opening doors and creating paths for the advancement of Hispanics in the legal profession."

“I am truly honored to receive this recognition,” said Jimmie Reyna. “It has been my good fortune throughout my life to have had so many opportunities to be of service. The Ohtli recognition is a true hallmark in my legal career and personal life and I thank the Government of Mexico.”

Jimmie received the award at the 34th Annual Convention of the Hispanic National Bar Association last week in Albuquerque, N.M. He accepted the award on behalf of his parents, the Rev. Julian C. Reyna and Mrs. Consuelo (Valdenebro) Reyna.
