Cyprus – Fighting the EOKA

This book is the second in a series of four, describing the exploits of Mark “Mac” Hudson, who held senior rank in British Special Operations Groups and experienced an amazing but often bizarre military career, which spanned several decades and was held in a number of diverse theatres of operation around the world.

This volume describes the emergency in Cyprus during the years from 1955 to 1964. At the start of the emergency, Cyprus remained a crown colony – a colony ruled by a British governor appointed by the reigning monarch.

A decade after the end of the Second World War, the British had serious problems on their hands with regards to Cyprus.The Greek Cypriots, who were the main inhabitants of the island, desired union with Greece, otherwise known as Enosis. This combined with the intense contention and hostility between the Turkish and Greek communities led to extreme outbreaks of violence which the British had to resolve.

In 1955, a vicious EOKA terrorist campaign led by Colonel George Grivas erupted. More than 100 British servicemen were killed at this time, many of whom lost their lives on what came to be known as “Nicosia's Murder Mile.”

Field Marshal Sir John Harding and his wife, Lady Harding, narrowly escaped being murdered when a bomb failed to detonate in their bedroom while Sir John was the resident governor of Cyprus.

Even British families were targeted, with the wives of two British servicemen shot in the back and killed. One of the women was the mother of five children.

From the point of an elite soldier, who served in Cyprus throughout this terrible time, the author offers a first hand account, which is sometimes appalling, but often humourous, of how it actually was to serve as a soldier during those bloody years in one of the most beautiful spots of the world.

Although part of a series, Cyprus – Fighting the EOKA can be read as a standalone book and does not require that you are familiar with the other works of the series to enjoy the content.

Written like something for an old-fashioned 'Boys Own' in the style of a'gripping yarn'. Perhaps how soldiers might tell the tale in a bar to impress. Facts are confused and inaccurate and lack little sense of political understanding of what was going on. Yes, it is a tale of, "Lets go and get them". But if one really wants to understand the Cyprus Emergency, its origins and how it shaped the future of Cyprus this is not worth reading. I was there for part of the "Emrgency" as a National Service man, this book disappointed me.
