Daniel Grou, Nathan Morlando among DGC TV noms

Vikings is up for the directorial achievement in dramatic series, while CBC productions have a hold on the directorial achievement in a comedy series section.

directorschairThe TV nominees are in for the Directors Guild of Canada’s 19th annual DGC Awards.

Set to be honoured during the week of Oct. 24, the national labour union which represents over 5,000 key creative and personnel in the screen-based industry received over 200 TV submissions this year. Notably, the awards will see Daniel Grou (Vikings, “The Best Laid Plans”) compete against Holly Dale (Transplant, “Pilot”), Dawn Wilkinson (Locke & Key, “Dissection”), Stephen D. Surjik (See, “Silk”) and Ken Girotti (Fortunate Son“For What It’s Worth”) for the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Series prize.

Meanwhile, the race for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Comedy Series features a raft of talent nominated for their work on CBC productions.

Daniel Levy and Andrew Cividino (Schitt’s Creek, “Happy Ending”) are up against Jordan Canning and Aleysa Young (Baroness von Sketch Show, “Humanity is in an Awkward Stage”); Adriana Maggs, Sarah Polley and Will Bowes for CBC Gem series Hey Lady!; The Kids in the Hall‘s Bruce McCulloch (TallBoyz, “What’s it gonna be, boys?”); and Joyce Wong (Workin’ Moms, “To Lure a Squirrel”).

On the directorial achievement in a family series side, Gabby Duran & the Unsittables secured two nods: one for Siobhan Devine for the episode “Warm, Thick and Saucy,” and another for Nimisha Mukerji for “Night Train and Vortex.” Megan Follows (Heartland, “The Eye of the Storm”), Felipe Rodriguez (Hudson & Rex, “Over Ice”), Leslie Hope (Lost in Space, “Echoes”) and Bruce McDonald’s (Malory Towers, “The Spider”) round out the list.

Winnifred Jong (Mystery 101: Dead Talk) and Nathan Morlando (Cardinal: Until the Night, “Scott”) are also among the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies For Television and Mini-Series selections. Others in the category include Michael Nankin (Chris Watts: Confessions of a Killer), Caroline Labrèche (No Good Deed) and Ali Liebert (Amish Abduction).

Of note, Britt Doughty received two nods in the DGC’s production design categories. Doughty is up for Dramatic Series for Impulse (“The Moroi”) and Movies for Television and Mini-Series for Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C. J. Walker (“A Credit to the Race”).

Hugh Elchuk and Sandy Pereira also received two nominations for their work on Cardinal: Until the Night in best picture editing – movies for television or miniseries. Elchuk is up for “John & Lise,” while Pereira is nominated for “Scott.” Cardinal: Until the Night is also among the nominees in the Best Production Design (Dennis Davenport) and Best Sound Editing (David McCallum, Barry Gilmore, Jane Tattersall, David Caporale and Brennan Mercer).

Hey Lady! also picked up nominations for Best Production Design – Comedy or Family Series (Ciara Vernon) and Best Picture Editing – Comedy or Family Series (David Wharnsby). As well, Utopia Falls (Best Production Design – Comedy or Family Series for Ian Brock and Best Picture Editing – Comedy or Family Series for James Patrick) and New Eden (Best Production Design – Comedy or Family Series for Chris Crane) were recognized.
