On this day
In 1614 Pocahontas, the daughter of a Native American chieftain, married John Rolfe, an English tobacco planter, securing peace between colonists and the Powhatan tribe. In 1616 the couple visited England, where she died in March 1617, aged about 21; in 1621 the Pilgrim ship Mayflower set sail from the Plymouth colony in North America for England. The ship arrived at Rotherhithe in London on May 6; in 1843 the formation of the “colony of Hong Kong” was confirmed in Letters Patent promulgated by Queen Victoria. The first governor was Sir Henry Pottinger, in office until May 8, 1844; in 1955 Sir Winston Churchill, aged 80, resigned as prime minister. He was succeeded by Sir Anthony Eden; in 1994 Kurt Cobain, the frontman for the rock band Nirvana, committed suicide at his home in Seattle, US. His body was discovered three days later by an electrician.
Nature notes
Rockpools fascinate because they seem like discrete, miniature worlds — albeit ones in which some of the inhabitants come and go with each tide. Along with shrimps, lurking blennies and the obligatory scuttling crab, an anemone is surely one of the best rockpool denizens to find. The snakelocks anemone has a large, brown or dun-coloured body and long green tentacles with purple tips. These contain a symbiotic algae that produces energy from sunlight; for this reason, snakelocks anemones are found only in shallow waters. They are predators of small fish, snails and other marine creatures. Unlike the smaller beadlet anemone, snakelocks anemones’ tentacles are rarely retracted.
