American cruise ships that have been stuck in port for more than a year could be โsailing by midsummer,โ provided they can meet safety guidelines by then, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said on Friday afternoon. Florida is suing the federal government to allow ships to immediately set sail from the state's ports, signaling that the issue could emerge as a political challenge for the Biden administration, much as reopening schools has.

The nation's tenuous progress in reopening classrooms for in-person instruction has encountered a new foe: the B.1.1.7 variant of the coronavirus, which is both more transmissible and more potent than the original, or wild type, strain that emerged in late 2019. Public health officials are trying to prepare school districts as B.1.1.7, which recently became the prevalent strain of the coronavirus in the United States, proliferates through Wisconsin, Michigan and other states. Speaking during a Friday briefing of the White House COVID-19 response team, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky made a distinction between cases that originate in schools, which is rare, and cases brought into schools from the outside community.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced Friday that he has vetoed three police reform measures approved by the Democrat-controlled General Assembly, all measures passed with enough votes to override the vetoes. The Republican governor vetoed legislation that includes the repeal of job protections in the police disciplinary process that have become common in other parts of the country. The House of Delegates voted 95-42 to override the veto of that measure Friday night, with votes to override the other vetoes expected Saturday.

Devin Murphy, Rep. Matt Gaetz's legislative director, has stepped down amid a federal investigation into sex trafficking allegations against the Florida Republican congressman, the New York Times first reported and Axios has confirmed. The latest: "It's been real," Murphy wrote in an email, obtained by Axios, to Republican legislative directors on Saturday morning, with the subject line: "Well...bye." Context: Gaetz, who has not been charged with any crimes, has repeatedly denied allegations of being sexually involved with a 17-year-old girl and claims that he shared naked images of women with other Congress members.
โWithout modern infrastructure, the US cannot create decent jobs, social justice or climate safety.โ
โThe plan itself is really a big bait-and-switch...A fraction of the spending is actually devoted to traditional infrastructure projects.โ
โFocusing on the size of the investment is misleading when you consider the high cost of not making it.โ
โRather than spending $2 trillion, we should privatize infrastructure where feasible and cut taxes and regulations on the rest.โ
โPublic investment can also be a major source of jobs and growth, helping to pull us out of the stagnation trap.โ
