Indian women archers win silver medal in World Archery Championships 2017

The Indian women’s compound team won a silver medal in World Archery Championships 2017 held at Mexico City, Mexico. The Indians won the medal after losing narrowly to Colombian team in the final.

Indian team comprising of Paonam Lily Chanu, Trisha Deb, and Jyothi Surekha Vennam was on the verge of making a historic win however had to settle for silver a medal. The Indians nevertheless was able to win a medal in the compound team archery section at the World Championships for the first time.

The Indian women lost the final by 228-234 to the fourth seeded Colombian team of the world record holder Sara Lopez, Alejandra Usquiano and Nora Valdez . With this medal, India has won five silver medals at the World Championships in Mexico .

Colombia, who landed only six arrows out of the 10-ring, took a three-point lead, 58-55, after the first six arrows and never let go.

The Indian squad had the highest per-match average of any team in the field in Mexico. India beat Russia by 232-229 in the first round and Denmark by 233-229 in the quarter final. The team defeated archers from Germany by 232-228 in semi final before clashing Colombia in the final. On the other hand, Columbians beat Canada, South Africa and South Korea on their ways to the final.

Korean team of Song Yun Soo, So Chaewon and Choi Bomin won bronze medal with victory over Germany by 235-227 in the event.
