Catholic Elementary Schools to Celebrate Halloween with Costume Parades on Friday, October 28 & Monday, October 31
?
The Catholic Elementary Schools of Broome County will be celebrating Halloween with students parading in their costumes.
St. John the Evangelist located at 9 Livingston Street, Binghamton will be hosting a Halloween Parade on Friday, October 28 at 1:30 p.m.
St. James located at 143 Main Street, Johnson City and All Saints located at 1112 Broad Street, Endicott will be hosting their parades on Monday, October 31 at 1:30 p.m.
The Catholic roots of Halloween date back to 835 AD when Pope Gregory IV moved the celebration for All Saints from May 13 to November 1. The night before the Feast Day became known as All Hallows Eve. Eventually the name was shortened to the current Halloween. On November 2, the Church celebrates All Souls Day. The purpose of these feasts is to remember all those who have died, whether they are officially recognized by the Church as saints or not.
“Halloween is a unique holiday where the sacred and the secular blend into a festive celebration.? The students in Broome’s Catholic Schools celebrate the traditions of Halloween while learning the significance of the holiday’s religious roots,” said Richard Bucci, President Catholic Schools of Broome County.
