Postdoctoral fellows (PDFs) are a key component of the Balsillie School’s vibrant intellectual community. Each PDF must be affiliated with a BSIA faculty member whose responsibility it is to recruit, select and supervise postdoctoral fellows. As the BSIA does not have its own funding source for PDFs, postdoctoral fellows must be employed by either the University of Waterloo or Wilfrid Laurier University, but would have their office at the Balsillie School.

Dr. Nash’s projects at the University of Waterloo examine education and training in national security and counter-terrorism in Canada and how the ‘terrorism’ label is informed and applied to a violent attack in Canada. Learn more
QES-AS Postdoctoral Fellow
Dr. Onyango completed her PhD in Health Geography in the faculty of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Her PhD focused on the Global Index of Wellbeing project with a focus on the health and wellbeing indicators that matter to Kenyans of different ages, genders and from different regions in the country. Dr. Shoker a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Waterloo where she works on issues related to gender, emerging technologies, and international security. Dr. Shoker is also the founder of Glassbox, a consultancy firm that analyzes software products that use AI for signs of bias and legal risk. Learn more
Hungry Cities Partnership Postdoctoral Fellow
Dr. Si is a human geographer with broad research interests in sustainable food system, alternative food networks, food security, food safety and rural development initiatives. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow with the Hungry Cities Partnership COVID-19 and Food Security in China Project at the BSIA. Learn more
