A native San Franciscan, Helen Katherine Forbes studied first at the San Francisco Institute of Art with Armin Hansen, then at the Munich Academy, and finally, in Paris. She painted subjects indigenous to the West and particularly California. Forbes lived for a time at an old deserted inn in Death Valley, finding inspiration for her scenes of the West. Later she did studies of the Paiutes and scenery around Virginia City, Nevada. She turned seriously to mural painting in 1934. She was a founder of the San Francisco Society of Women Artists.
