Giana's Return v1.10
« on: December 23, 2014, 11:58:12 pm »
Here comes the very special Christmas present from Retroguru!

<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20210509141508/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdwveX_iUiU" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdwveX_iUiU</a>

Giana's Return aims to be a worthy unofficial sequel to "The Great Giana Sisters" - an all-time classic platform game made in the late 80s by Armin Gessert, Manfred Trenz and Chris H?lsbeck. The title back then gained massive attention as a "Super Mario" copy, but still had its very own charm and fan base. Giana's Return expands on its spiritual predecessor, offering a whole new level of experience.

Evil Swampy and his followers have stolen the same magic ruby, which once made it possible for Giana and Maria to return from their dream. As if this was not bad enough, Maria was kidnapped as well! Embark on a new quest as Giana, get back the magic ruby and save your beloved sister Maria from the clutches of Swampy!

Thanks for the porting! This platform-game is a very good addition to the GCW Zero games fleet! ;)

Yes, I noticed it. The crackle should be related to the jump effect audio-sample (the other sound effects don't seem to have the same "issue")  and, in any case, it's perceptible just a little...

That's the quality of the GCW Zero speakers - I can't fix it.
If you don't like it - play the game on the headphones.

Honestly, I've been testing this game carefully on GCW Zero since 2012 and I never noticed any "crackling" until you guys pointed it out. I still can't quite hear it, but I can tell the quality between the speakers and the headphones. Maybe I got used to it?

Then it must be contagious, because I had several beta testers ;)

Anyway, enough of that - let's talk about the game.

I have to admit, I never liked Giana's Return, although most people seem to love it.
I never played the original Giana sisters (Nintendo kid ^^), so I don't know, whether this is just a good copy of the game physics, but I think the handling, the acceleration while moving, and the jump mechanism are terrible. Furthermore I had often the problem, that I didn't know, what something in front of me shall be - and if it kills me (most of the time it did...).

But, that's just me. For most people this port is nice probably. :)

I suggest you play the game again then. Version 1.10 features various level design fixes and game improvements.

Or maybe Xaijiqq and I have a dog hearing (ultrasound perception) ! :D I'm just kidding! :P

Talking about the game: I played for a while (until the level 15) and the game seems to work very well ! ;)

This most recent versions seems only to be avaible for GCW, Wii and Windows at the moment.
Not even Ubuntu. O_o (But at least the MacOS port is even older than the gp2x port. :>)

Thanks Zear for the early Xmas present, I was a big fan of the original back in the day on my Commodore 64, I had luckily pre-ordered it so didn't suffer from the game being pulled from the shelves with the threat of Nintendo!
Merry Xmas one and all!
Looking forward to what's in store for the Zero in 2015 :)

Been playing it.
Somewhere on their FAQ, they state the trainer would slowly be shown at 500 Facebook likes. They got at least 700, but can't find said code or whatever entry I need to add to config.

How to Unlock Trainer

- Start stage 1.
- Grab one of the rubies in the beginning.
- Now you have to jump at the bonus blocks in order, in a specific way.
You jump left at the first block...
jump right at the two lower blocks...
jump left at the higher block...
jump right at the next block...
then jump left at the next two blocks.

Remember, these are all in order.
You then get a trainer/cheat menu that allows you to have unlimited lives, unlimited time, set the status of Giana, and choose which level to play in without a password.

Speaking of passwords: the passwords on the Zero are different than the PC version. Believe me, I tried.

Yes, they are different for every platform. GCW Zero shares the same passwords with Dingoo A320 port though.
