TOTAL (35%), SONATRACH (35%) and REPSOL (30%) have started production on the Tin Fouye Tabankort (TFT) natural gas field located approximately 1,200 kilometers from Algiers in southeast Algeria. The three partners operate the field jointly under a production sharing agreement signed in January 1996 for a 20-year period effective from startup.

Production of wet gas, which started at a rate of 5 million cubic meters per day (cm/d), should reach the nominal rate of 20 million cm/d (around 7 billion cm per year) within the next few weeks. The wet gas is separated into dry gas, LPG and condensate in the field extraction plant, which has two identical processing trains built by Brown & Root in collaboration with several Algerian service companies. Condensate and LPG are then shipped separately to the Algerian coast at rates of respectively 23,000 b/d (850,000 metric tons per year) and 26,000 b/d (750,000 metric tons per year). The dry natural gas is transferred to the SONATRACH transportation system.

Investment for TFT field development amounted to approximately $700 million shared by each of the partners in proportion to their interest. As repayment and compensation for this investment, TOTAL and its partners receive the share of natural gas, LPG and condensate output they are entitled to under the production sharing agreement. They also receive additional LPG and condensate from SONATRACH in exchange for handing over their share of natural gas to the Algerian company.

TOTAL is also a partner with SONATRACH in operating the Hamra field, which started production in late 1995. The output of this field is currently about 1 million metric tons per year (t/y) of condensate and 450,000 t/y of LPG, or around 40,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Startup of TFT field production is consequently an important milestone for TOTAL's operations in Algeria, where the Group is committed to actively pursuing sustained growth.
