As the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games gets underway in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the Philippine athletes look to bring home the championship, the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) and its attached agencies are also doing their part in covering the SEA Games for the Filipino people.
People’s Television Network (PTV), the government’s flagship television network under PCOO, is the official broadcaster of the 29th SEA Games. In addition to the television medium, Filipinos can livestream the games on PTV’s dedicated website for the 29th SEA Games: http://seag2017.ptv.ph.
Sports Radio (Radyo Pilipinas 3 – DZSR 918 kHz) and the Philippine News Agency are also covering the 2017 SEA Games by providing updates and tallies on our country’s quest for medal hauls through the airwaves and the internet, respectively.
The Presidential Communications will also give updates for its online audiences thru its social media pages.
With dozens of stations spread across the nation, PTV, Radyo Pilipinas and PNA has the SEA Games covered for the widest reach possible in the country.
The SEA Games originally started as Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games in which the latter was conceptualized by then Vice President of the Thailand Olympic Committee Laung Sukhumnaipradit.
The first SEAP Games was held in Bangkok, Thailand from December 12-17, 1959. In 1977, the Philippines, together with Indonesia, joined the multi-sports event and the league was renamed to what is today known as the SEA Games.
The Philippines hosted the SEA Games three times — 1981, 1991, and 2005. The country’s best performance was in 2005 when it brought home 113 gold medals, 84 silver medals, and 94 bronze medals, claiming the overall championship in that year.
